Poll: Tune of the Month for July 2018
« on: June 26, 2018, 03:18:37 PM »

Hi all - time for another poll?

First up, last month's and the month before's runner up (just) was this Passepied de la Poule Noire - This wonderful tune comes from the playing of Marinette Bonnert in 21 Boutons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdkClwSu_rw - first tune in the set.

Since we've just done the May Reel, and I rather like the Dr Faustus version of it, let's try the other tune in the set - Bacca Pipes Jig; here's Jim Sawyer again, just a later on in the same video: https://youtu.be/PIpZYznP1CY?t=3m31s

Plundering Lester again, here's Redwing, a tune I've grown to like quite a lot recently... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45odgDfM4lc

Grenville Morris - written by Sam Sweeney, as featured on the latest Leveret album, and a tune I've been thinking about learning recently... DTN fortunately beat me to it, so we have this rather wonderful version to listen to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q028xkvfIDk ; I'll be plundering your channel a bit more in future Derek :-)

Interesting choices once again. Thanks for linking those, Clive, as always.

On a sidenote: I'd like to also put forward a recording of "Grenville Morris" by matthias de smet (which you all most likely know from his various superb live recordings of folk gigs) on youtube.

Just been jotting the tune down for Granville Morris and I'm pretty sure I have the notes now, but I'm not convinced that I've got the barlines right. I make it an alternating bar of 4 then 5 all the way through. Not 9 as that would imply a different time signature - but big beats dividing into 2, and effectively, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4 etc.
Anyone know how it's written? The big beats are obvious, just don't know where I'd put the front of each bar yet.

P&t, from the dots on the booklet of the Inventions L.P. Sam’s bar lines go 4,4,4,6, 4,4,4,6 in the A and 4,6,4,6,4,4,4,6 in the B
There’s a little tiddle at the start, the A music 1st bar starts on the d. It’s in F.
....unless I’ve made an error. My dot reading is poor but I’m pretty good at maths.

(I have this on my to-do list because my mother thought it amusing to give me the middle name of Grenville, which, for complicated reasons, has given me a slightly split personality)

I have lost my booklet of Rob's dots  and I only bought it last week.  :( I don't suppose any one could let me have an abc for Grenville, to dry up my tears?

I hand wrote it from the Leveret youtube performance, and when I've typed it up you'd be welcome to have it. Is notation ok, if so which key do you want it in. Without starting a long discussion about the real key of this piece, lets say it is in Bb, and uses mainly Bb, F and C chords on the video. I imagine that you'd want it in C for a DG box.
I have to say that this will be my transcription, and may not be perfect so if anyone wanted to share an authorised version it might be better.

Unfailingly I find that I have voted for the tune that has the least support. It's a special knack I have. If you want to bet on a horse and need to know which one to avoid, ask me what my pick is ;)

Here's the nearest I can get to Bacca Pipes Jig. There are no Fs in the A music so the key change from Am to Em is not a problem.

Thanks Pete. There are a few inconsistent note lengths in the abc.  Here's an updated version.

Thanks for the Grenville abc. Key doesn't matter. I have a C/F (:)
Mind you, I can't think C/F so I'll stick  it in D/G

Probably since sometimes it's hard to pick, and you can vote for more than one tune. It's handy!

Don't know how you are doing that. It only allows me one vote, then all other options are blocked, unless you remove your initial vote.

Yes same here, I can change my vote but I can't vote twice. Only a wild guess but perhaps if admins or moderators vote they may not be included in the count of "members" who have voted?

I voted for two, no problem. You have to cast them all on the same (first) visit. [Edit: I think "response" is  probably  more accurate than "visit". ]
