RIP Joe Burke

Not sure if it has been mentioned here yet, but the legendary box player Joe Burke has passed away. May he rest in peace.

That's very sad news.  An extraordinary musician.  I remember him playing in Drumshanbo around 20 years ago and marvelling at his sheer virtuosity.  RIP Joe.

Very sorry to hear that. As a lifelong D/G player I find the B/C system unfathomable but he could surely work some magic with it!

I listened hard to him in my earlier days when I was trying to learn to play Irish music on a B/C/C♯ box, and remember seeing him at Islington Folk club in the 90's.

A couple of too-brief videos with bits of conversation between Joe and Frankie Gavin:

And making others laugh with the box:

It was an education just to watch his fingers move. He put his mark on a couple of generations of box players, I think, which was in a curious convoluted sort of way both a massive tribute to him and maybe led also to some criticism because for a while everyone was a Joe Burke clone. That wasn't his fault, but it was a bit of a relief when a wider range of styles started to become more popular spearheaded maybe by the likes of Jackie Daly.

I always liked Joe playing The Morning Mist on his B/C box with the triplets flying, and today's sad news prompted me to try playing it on my C/F Hohner Erica.
Here it is, once through, warts and all. I can imagine hearing Joe's big laugh and a smart quip if he could see me struggling my way through his great reel :)

Brave effort Smiley! Richard there's a great video of Joe playing a duet with Jackie Daly on Youtube if you can find it, shows their contrasting styles really well.

Yes - someone shared the vid of Daly and Burke yesterday - on my 'must watch' list - but can I find it now ?
Clearly Burke was a great player but I have to say that personally I prefer Daly's style.

Julian, yes I am more drawn to Jackie Daly's playing as  it centres around the D row so therefore much more accessible than what is to me the incomprehensible B/C system[ok I know many people swear by it] also I'm a massive fan of slides and polkas!

Thanks for the link Alan ! Certainly chalk and cheese, but I'm moved to listen to some more of Joe Burke's playing (and definitely more of Jackie Daly - I loved his early recordings )

August 1977 Mrs Crowley's Bar. Kenmare, Co. Kerry.
A few of us Welsh and English lads started playing around 8pm. Rumpty-tumpty tunes and as many Irish ones that we could remember (3 or 4?)
10.30pm, Joe Burke and his mates walked in. Complete shock as he was living in America at the time!
We quickly hid our instruments and slipped off to the sidelines.
Oh, what a night! We left at 3am with the session in full swing.
