the dots for this are probably somewhere on t'internet

Bluebell Polka on tunearch.org

Edited because the forum software did something bad with the parentheses in the URL. The link does work now, for me anyway.

Should I just rerecord one of my earliest melodeon dream tune, "Return from Helsinki" as recorded by mcgrooger, because that song is what has brought me as far as I've gotten?

I remember you saying that you'd been inspired by my video of the tune, Fred. I'm both embarassed that you were so enthusiastic about my version and really pleased that you've achieved your goal and would now be able to play it at least as well as me!  :|bl (:)
Thank you for your kind remarks on this and other stuff! Steve.

Well, here we go.

https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/return-from-helsinki-take-3

So here comes Ian Stephenson's "Return from Helsinki" again, as it is the first tune I heard and at the same time thought that I might be able to one day earn the skills to play it. I did not know the original version up until a few months ago and so for me this song is not primarily by Ian Stephenson (although the rightful owner and composer of the song) but by Mcgrooger because his interpretation has brought me to the point at which I wanted to learn the melodeon - so I guess: thank you, Mcgrooger.  (:)

Includes: Misplays, varying basses and chords, varying rhythms and much more!
I love the tune but when I'm recording, it's far from how I normally play it. It's definitely faster and less soft. And because I'm a spoiled young guy, I don't have the patience to hit record, delete and rerecord for 20 or more times until it comes close to my normal playing. Nota bene: Take 3 means the recordings that I've saved and not the recordings that I've deleted. ;)

Hi all - I thought I'd do a little mazurka by Eric Theze - a wonderful, wonderful musician very much in the style and genre of Stephane Delicq; in fact when I used to go to Gennetines (quite a few years back now), I would very much put their bals on a par and enjoy them equally. Eric plays bandoneon, piano, clarinet, and quite a few other things, but for me his bandoneon and piano work are something else.

Anyway, there seems to be a few melodeon versions of this tune "Arthur" out there, although very few recordings of Eric himself playing it that I can find, and even fewer where he's actually playing the tune. So I learned this mostly off Massimo Craveri's rather splendid version.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQSK3Pi6O44

It's played on the G/C Van der Aa Compact III of course.

For bonus value, and because I sometimes try these tunes out on piano to see if they give me a different slant on the tune, here's a version of me playing it on the piano.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqwF637s7qo

I'm not really a pianist (don't play in public, ever!) but thought it would be interesting to see how the melodeon version and piano version do over time in terms of views, likes (and dislikes!) relative to each other on my channel. Time will tell!

Another one to miss methought, then thought again. Has been suggested but not posted that I could find. The single row take means the clever parts are left open to those that can.

Musicians that I admire....Gosh, so many! I guess the flavour of the month, for me, has to be Pascale and Toon of Naragonia. I can’t seem to stop listening to them and I have spent all my pocket money on a bundle of their CD’s and their Tunebook. Their music seems so full of subtleties and feeling, so a bit of a challenge for me but hey, that’s a good thing eh!

Very nice, David. I also bought the tunebook a couple of days ago, but I'm still listening and couldn't yet decide which one to try first. Maybe now I know. Your playing is always a good inspiration. Thanks & greetings.

My musical heroes, the early years! (The recording are of my versions)
Rod Stradling, his bands "Oak" and "Old Swan Band" opened up the ears of many of us to what real English music could sound like. I found the Oak  L.P in the public library (remember them) and that was the start of me and melodeons, so blame him (:) https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/new-rigged-shiprig-a-jigmp3
Dan Quinn in his "Flowers and Frolics" period. Still one of the best players around. These tunes are from his time with Will Duke https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/scan-testers-schottischesmp3
These two were probably responsible for starting most of us back in the 1970's in England, although up in the North East it still felt as if you were ploughing a lone furrow!

Ooooh I did not know this one. Thanks for sharing it in your version, I very much like how you play it. Very fluid and confident.
You and your upload brought me to learn the tune myself.  :||:

Frank Sears, many may remember, did an Advent Calendar of Quebec tunes 18 months ago with a new tune each day. Recently he's published 2 books of Quebec tunes in standard notation with chords and in tab format with alternate bars. The books are accompanied by CDs containing recordings of each tune with piano accompaniment, just the piano accompaniment (for you to play along with) and videos. The piano accompaniments are played by Lise Beauchemin.

...

Mitch

may i ask where you aquired the books and cds?

thanks

A recording back from 2014, but Andy Cutting is definitely on my inspirations list. Played on a Tania Rutkowski G/C accordion.

I agree about Fred Paris, a real master. Anyway, more of my melodeon heroes:(my recordings of their tunes)
Bob Cann - https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/ford-farm-reelcornish-quickstepmp3 It always surprises me how few people seem to know Bob's tunes these days. At least when I start playing them in sessions the room tends to go quiet, apart from Dartmoor festival of course.
Oscar Woods - https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/oh-joemp3 I never met Oscar but his playing was a big influence thanks to the few recordings I could find.
Reg Hall - https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/red-wingmp3 This is one of the tunes on "English Country Music" the L.P that brought Walter Bulwer and Billy Cooper to a wider audience, with Reg on melodeon. His playing with "The Rakes" would also be worth the "hero" status.
Tom Orchard - https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/gypsy-waltzmp3 I first met Tom in the Elsinore at Whitby festival and then at Dartmoor. Anyone who has not been to one of his sessions should try to get there, musically full of energy and very welcoming.
