How to illustrate held bass +changing chord?
« on: July 11, 2018, 05:16:18 PM »

Hi All,
I'm currently attempting to transpose a tune - The History Man - from the accurate music I have.
It clearly shows a held bass whilst changing chords below the held bass note.
I'm currently annotating it as "Gg" then "Gc" then "Gd" so the music shows it as bass + chords above the stave as opposed to
Holding the G  bass and chord then keeping the held bass down and changing to a C chord then D chord .

Is there a way of showing this properly?
cheers

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

That's what I do, except that I notate upper/lower case and bass/chord the other way round (already much discussed, but that's how I do it. Don't think that matters as long as it is made clear, somewhere. There is no standard, as far as I know).

Hi Q

I abc-ifyed and transposed this a couple of weeks ago. The a is as  per the written version we both have. The b didn't sound right so I confess I played about with it until it did. I have the bass notes showing below the stave and the chords above - want me to ping my transcription over to you?  Seems like we are both on the same track with this one.

Ah..... Helena, that sounds a good idea, chords above, bass  below the stave.
Yes please, ping away!
Thanks

"Standard" notation (3 consequtive bars in 4/4) is

    | G/G  - | C/G - | D/G - | G/G - |

(The final bar being my additition, to complete a weak modal I, IV, V, I cadence)

Note that | G - | defaults to G triad on G bass

I've taken a leaf out of Helena's book and indicated the bass note *below* the stave and kept the chord symbols above.
Using capitol letters for bass notes and lower case for chords.
Therefore "g" at the appropriate point will signify a g chord above the stave.
"_G" produces a G bass below the stave.
Didn't realise an underscore _ means the letter is below the stave. Thanks Helena!

I did look up how to symbolise holding a bass note it by adding a dash after the bass "_G______"
As you keep pressing --- you see a line appear under the stave on-screen which I thought looked ok to remind me to hold the G bass.
The abc notation looked horrendous with lots of -------------------- in it!
It looked ok on the screen but printing it produced overlaps for when I'd tried to show a change from a G bass to -say - a D bass.
All in all I was over-thinking it.

Far easier to have an abc produced set of dots with chords above, bass notes below, and under the title a reminder to 'hold bass or chord down until the next change'
…..but it was a good learning and experimenting process for me as a learner of abc.
The tune made me learn how to link to different notes (A-B), and how to make one be staccato (A-.B) so it's an all good leaning process.
cheers

I can't take credit for that idea - that's how tunes are notated in 'Liaisons Diatoniques' and it seems a good idea to me.  As for discovering that an underscore preceding the letter puts it below the stave,  Colin looked it up t'other week and it thought it would come in handy, and it did.

Yes the underscore is handy, my basic knowledge of abc hadn't got that far.
Well played Colin  (:)
As listed above, I learnt how to tie two different notes, even either side of a bar line, and make one staccato so I've learnt 3 things in transposing the tune.
Learning is good!

Totally agree! Alexandra Browne's* notation methodology in her tunebook 'Liaisons Diatoniques' is probably the most comprehensive and effective I have ever come across. Also, every note, symbol and item musical text is beautifully drawn by hand - so the book is also a work of art.
