David Vernon plays a version of it in four different keys on a proper accordion here watch it all the way through as it really speeds up as he goes along! Superb stuff! Like to see someone do his arrangement on a 2 row button box!
The Session provide a written version of it.

I prefer this version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMjq01ktKQc

Any body playing seated box in shorts/boxers gets my vote (:)

I've just sat and learnt it in Gmaj, on my D/G 2.5 row box*.  It seemed to fit the instrument fairly easily, albeit with a bit of careful fingering, so I'm perplexed out how it might of obtained  such a reputation.   ???

Of course, there's always scope to make it much more difficult by adding variations, but I guess that applies to anything.

After numerous hours of studying Joe Derrane, I picked up the tune with all the rolls and flicks about a year ago. Not THAT hard a tune, but something out of the ordinary. Joe Cooley also played it, as did Kevin Keegan, though in a very simplified version.

As an ignorant fiddler, but learning the box as fast as I can - what's hard about the HLH? ??? Are we discussing the original or The New High Level Hornpipe anyway?  >:E

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Thought I'd rise to the challenge.  I play it in Bb, Will Starr style - mistakes and all!

Great stuff Graeme - and in its original key as well, not the cheat G major version that I'm struggling with!

OK, having previously mentioned that I'd had a go at learning this, I suppose it's only fair that I show some evidence.  My rendition is very much a 'cheating' version in G, played on a D/G box that has D notes available on the pull.

When I was a bairn my uncle used to play a tune on his box and he said was the hardest tune anyone could ever play.
Can anyone in here play it.. was called "The High Level Hornpipe"

Chris Parkinson does a nice version of it with a couple of other ("Byrne's" and "The Acrobat").  They all work pretty well on a D/G, but the accidentals in "The Acrobat", as played by Mr P, are a bit tricky on a two row.  If I'm not mistaken, he plays The High Level with a A part and a B part, but some folks play it with a C part as well.

It's fun to try and learn, however, and is definitely a workout.

If, by "The Acrobat", you mean the piece that trombone players often use as a novely solo, then I agree - I've had a quick go and think it will be a really fun piece to get.  So far, haven't found any problem with accidentals, either, but certainly haven't tried it all yet.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Accidentals would be VERY tricky if it's THIS one(!!):
