Tune of the Month for August 2018: The Valiant
« on: July 31, 2018, 07:27:22 PM »

The people have spoken (eventually!); Simon Ritchie's 48 bar jig The Valiant is our worthy winner. Here's a couple of takes for you

(Mel, slow for learning) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALm72cyhzqA
(Mary and Anahata, full speed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqMIvKferH0

I can't comment on how accurate this ABC is, but you can find some ABC for it here:

http://www.folktunefinder.com/tunes/201404

This is a new one for me too; should be fun!

Cheers,

Clive

The version in Paul Hardy's Session Tunebook seems to be almost exactly the same...

DG Pokerwork steady march pace, G 4 stop, slightly more jaunty.  Change is at 2:08. Always good to have another 48 bar jig in the toolkit.

Avoiding the 'end of month rush' for the first time in ages, here's my take on this:

https://youtu.be/yePp8w6UJU4

Played on a Saltarelle L'Elfique in D/G (Lester's old one, actually), it flies along and rewards being played loud. Nice tune - don't know why I've never learned it before - and a very useful 48 bar jig to have in the repertoire.

Oops. I seem to repeat the A music a couple of times making it a 64 bar jig, 2nd and 3rd times through. Not very good for dancing then - bear it in mind if trying to learn it off my version.

Cheers,

Clive

As ever, that's a pretty great piece of playing going on there. What melodeon are you playing?

Thanks Clive. I play a melodeon made by my friend Emmanuel Pariselle. A two rows and a half, three voices but three keys... G-C / F-Bb/ A-D. And 18 bass to play in the three keys... That's why I always play only one voice.. It's funny when I put the three voices together...

Wow... clever system! And just beautifully played of course.

Lovely playing, I very much enjoyed the steady sonorous work on the bass side!

And as far as I remember, you have asked for a thumbs down a while ago in a discussion. So I took the liberty to grant you this (admittedly unusual) wish for this unlisted video. ;-)

That sounds really good, Thoon, but I can't get my head around what you mean wrt three keys. Do you have a layout that would illustrate it?

Yeah, confused me as well until I got it.
Each voice has a different key - If voice 1 is on your box is G/C, if voice 2 is on your box is F/Bb and if voice 3 is on you have A/D.
With more than one voice on, you have cacophony since each button plays 2 or 3 different notes.

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?
Send me a private message or comment on the German Accordion Problem spreadsheet to improve the statistics of the project and get an estimate of the production date of the box if it is not known.

It is exactly what I tried to say. I can only play one voice alone because each voice has its own key. Sorry for my english... I am french.. ;-)

My totm contributions have been very sporadic recently – finger-troubles and loads of other things have really thrown a spanner in the works, but…. what a great tune, I really enjoyed this and expect to have a lot of fun improving on this – the tune is a definite “keeper”.
And Simon’s an Essex boy too! The land of my fathers, both of them.

My goodness it has been quiet this month! Everyone is at festivals I hear. I have not been at festivals, but summer vacation (ha!) has really flummoxed my schedule and left me no time for melodeon practice. Pity too, this is a great tune! I hope to be back in the action next month once my kids return to school and I can get a half hour practice in the mornings after they board the school bus.

Could be but at least I am not. I've been working on my Master's thesis which is due for hand-in on friday. So while I do play for a short moment of stress relief from time to time, I didn't get around to recording this month. Maybe I can squeeze it in during next week at some point but it's highly likely that my contribution will have to wait until september. The tune itself is awesome and very fun to play and I dare say that my progress would allow me to record it already. (:) Looking forward to have more for my box again.  :||:

Contribution at 30.08.2018. Yet, I'm on the first page. That was a slow month indeed. :D

https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/the-valiant-take-1

Few hickups here and there, as always. Played it with quite a bit of swing in it, that's how the song feels right to me. The last repetition is then done with slow long bass notes to let it cool off. (:)
Hope you enjoy the listen.

Simon Richie seems to have the knack of writing tunes that feel like trad tunes, interesting without being clever for the sake of it. If you like "The Valiant" I suggest you look out for his "Thaxted Square". Anyway, this is my effort played on a Tommy.

Wasn't particularly smitten with this tune to start with, but decided to have a go anyway! It's really interesting how it ends up repeating sections of itself in different places. Also wanted to play around with using Bm as a substitute for G, too, since that seemed to work ok in a few places. Just 2x through since I only decided to work on it a few days ago.

The Valiant; https://youtu.be/2WFONo8MQ78

Managed to not over expose the video this time but sadly my phone decided to use the brightness of what was under the focus point to determine exposure maybe - I focused it on my bellows so every time the white/black tape moves around it likes to adjust it. It's annoying and another thing to work on for next time I guess...
