Unusual(?) use of '-'...
« on: November 20, 2019, 11:38:15 AM »

I just came across the following ABC code:

...| B-AA A2 c | Bcd GAB | B-AA A2 E |...

Anyone know what the hyphens mean please? They can't be meant as ties as B is different from A...

Is it possibly a mistake for a slur - should it be:

...| (BA)A A2 c | Bcd GAB | (BA)A A2 E |...

The 'reverse' mistake (using a slur when a tie is meant) is fairly common(*):

...| B(AA) A2 c | Bcd GAB | B(AA) A2 E |...

but I haven't seen this before...

Thank you.

Roger

(*) From GG's manual: ...Although ties and slurs are graphically very similar, they have a completely different
musical meaning. Do not use ties to connect notes of different pitch: MIDI output (see Section 6.1, p. 91) would
be wrong...

My guess is that it is ignorance of correct ABC syntax on the transcriber's part and a slur was intended.

That was my first thought, but, the 'intended slur' does not appear on the score (at least in EasyABC it
doesn't), so I am a little mystified. Surely the transcriber would have spotted that? Maybe I will try feeding
the code directly to abcm2ps, etc. to see what happens, instead of going via EasyABC. Ta...

Likely the transcriber was using different software and it worked, or the transcriber does not use typesetting software at all and is not aware of the difference in meaning.

It has just occurred to me that the file may have been exported from another program which exports to xml. Easy ABC imports .xml, the results are not always perfect  ::) .

With abcm2ps (which I use, and which is the ABC engine in several other programs) a '-' between different notes is flagged as an error. Possibly not a fatal one, which would be why you get a rendering without the slur/tie showing on it.

Aye, that's exactly what happens. I'm strongly tempted to just edit 'em out when encountered - doesn't
seem to have any effect...
