Bass reed slow to arrive at pitch
« on: August 20, 2018, 05:42:06 PM »

The big bass reed on my HA114D is slow to arrive at pitch; it generally starts flat (especially if I give it a hard push) and then builds up to being at the correct pitch. This results in the bass side sounding flat most of the time because I rarely push the spoon open long enough for it to arrive at pitch. However, if I sharpen the pitch, I will invariably find times where the bass note is sustained long enough for it to sound too sharp. Any way to counter this issue? I don’t find this problem on any of my other HA114s.

Could be a bit of fluff stuck in it, or a sticking valve?

Reed setting/profile could be an issue? Is it breathing too much before sounding? (Wondering why the hard push?)
I’m sure you’ve looked and things seem ok, but if it’s an original reed and has not been altered, it has likely just eased away from it’s original setting.
The pros on here will be along to advise I’m sure.

Hohner bass reeds are sometimes like that.  As mentioned previously check that both valves are opening freely, and closing completely.  Also make sure the pallet is opening fully, and the reed gap is not too small.

I always think that Hohner bass reeds have more of a “twang!” or “boing!” than a pure note?!  (:)
