Three row project
« on: September 05, 2018, 10:15:12 PM »

This is a tentative question so no snarky comments please! If I had more than one three row G/C/F boxes needing repair and a delapidated Bb/Eb box beyond practical repair but with a decent set of reeds all made in the same part of the world, let's say Dix reeds in a Klingenthall box. . . Might I reasonably expect to be able to move the inside row of 'F' reeds to the outside row and add the Bb/Eb reeds from the donor box to the inside row in order to ceate an F/Bb/Eb box? Basses should sort themselves out maybe?

The F reeds from a GCF would be an octave higher that what you would need.

...so you *might* be be able to use the low F pitched reeds in the upper part of your new low F row. You'd still need to find/create some low F reeds...

They would be paired wrongly per reed plate though, so would still need a lot of tuning.

Many thanks for all of your comments, most informative. I think I'll shelve that idea, at least for the moment.

Don't give up on the idea Jimmy, I'm already thinking about a Bb/Eb/Ab and a two row three voice MMM G/C  8)

Have you considered the alternative of trying to trade/swap one of your G/C/F boxes for an F/Bb/Eb? I ask only because I might  just about possibly be interested in such a deal.

My original question was hypothetical, I don't own a G/C/F box at the moment but I have the opportunity to buy two together. I wouldn't really need two boxes in the same tuning and wondered if I might be able to mess about a bit with parts I have to hand to make something different but that now seems unlikely. Exchanging one of them for a box already tuned in F/Bb/Eb (+/- a little cash either way) might be of interest but it's all starting to get quite complicated!
