Here a great triple hornpipe from Playford using bass note accompanyment only. z = rest and x = no note, either can be used in the %%MIDI gchord command to produce a silent beat so %%MIDI gchord fxf and %%MIDI gchord fzf will both have the same effect, bass note on beats 1 and 3 only.

I was wondering if the Red Lion Hornpipe would emerge in this discussion!
I first heard it through Brass Monkey's playing, and then JK playing it fast on a single row in one of his cd's accompanying his English Choice books.  It is one of my tunes that I'm never happy with and haven't got it properly off-pat.
I'm never sure where the chords fall....... Niether the band nor JK's efforts on a single row are explicit in when the chords should be played.

A workshop over the summer featured a 3/2 tune so I think I'm getting there in my general understanding.
The workshop tune from Hazell Askew brought my attention to the absolute precision in where she put the bass/chord, and when she *didn't* play.
I keep going back to the Red Lion and trying to be as precise.
Wondering how do others play it?

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Yes, that's clear, and Anahata has a nice version, here, with Mary

I am finding it difficult to express my question:
Am I right in thinking the beat occurs on the first note of the phrase in each bar?

I think I am hearing three beats to the bar with equal emphasis on each beat. Each beat contains more than one note and it is the first of this group that is emphasised. Perhaps you are counting each beat as a bar? I may be completely wrong here (happens a lot!) so maybe this is best left for Anahata to answer.

If it's any help, the Red Lion starts on the first beat of the bar. That "dfdf" pattern is the first beat each time. That should get your beats reference sorted.

I blame the incoherent rambling at the start of that clip and the fluffed notes on having had a 5 hour nightmare non-stop drive to get there. The Dartford crossing was closed because of high winds, and East London was gridlocked. We arrived about 10 minutes before our first set was due to start, having not had the expected leisurely meal en route.

(yes, we should have gone all the way round the M25 the other way. 20/20 hindsight...)

Yes it is as I thought and both Pete and Anahata confirmed.
I was right in my thoughts, just needed reassuring!
Thanks both.

Right.... I need to keep at it and mentally move it into the 'learnt' folder as I've been messing with it for too long  ;)
Cheers

Thanks to all contributions on this thread, especially Gena and Peter.
I've had a go at the  '%%MIDI gchord fff' command and understand now how it works, and hopefully it'll help with writing the horn parts.
I appreciate the comments from Steve and Anahata re the issues with accompanying triple time hornpipes. Does anyone have any evidence for how these were accompanied historically?
John Offord is his 'John of the Green' book made some suggestions as to how they could be stepped, and that was one prompt for us having a go at writing a dance to step to. Looking at videos on YouTube, current dancers walk them.

Hugh, bear in mind that the MIDI command can be used in the body text to vary the accompanyment through the tune as long as the command is in square brackets.

[%%MIDI gchord fxf]"Dm"a8 "C"g4|[%%MIDI gchord fff]"Dm"a2g2f2c2d2f2|[%%MIDI gchord ccc]
