Sam Mebbett...The Ella Munro Band
« on: September 14, 2018, 01:22:57 PM »

It is not very often that I get to hear a real live melodeon player, where I live but I will next week. The Ella Munro Band is performing at The Jersey Arts Centre on Friday evening and I am looking forward to hearing them, especially as Sam Mebbett plays a Clement Guais melodeon, which I like the look of but have never seen in real life.

Has anyone else heard them?

Sam Mabbett  ...his dad will be justifiably proud, that apple didn't fall far from the tree :)

You mean Sam Mabbett, as in 'Infinite Cherries'. Been around for years!

Now a key member of Norther Company.   I saw this band in France in July at Le Son Continu where they went down a storm - standing ovation and sold out of CD's in minutes.  It was quite a performance.

Here they are in a studio setting  recorded by Ian Stephenson at Simpson Street Studios, now based at Coquetdale Music Trust, a converted church in Thropton near Morpeth.

If you mean the one in the Northern Company video Roger, it's a Serefini.

The Ella Munro Band concert made for a very lovely evening. I recommend anyone to go and see them!

The real reason I was there, was to hear Sam Mebbett. I wasn’t disappointed and I learned a lot from him. He played two accordions, a Clement Guais 2 1/2 row G/C and a Serefini 3 row.

The first thing that I learned was about sensitivity. He played gently and sometimes very softly. He played often without using basses but instead, decorated the treble line with many grace notes, trills and runs. Quite beautiful.

Secondly, there was no sheet music on the stage, and I noticed how hard he was listening to the guitar and the singer, reacting to them all the time, being really supportive of the singer.

Thirdly, as he swopped from one instrument to the other, I realised how it was Sam that was squeezing the best out of both those instruments and not the other way round. I had the feeling that he could make the cheapest instrument sound good.

I sense that Sam has a great future ahead of him, it was a real pleasure to listen to this sensitive performance, with occasional flashes of genius. When I spoke to him after the concert, his absolute love of his music was very apparent.

Play it again Sam...and again, and again...!

arty, what a lovely little review. His playing has obviously made a huge impression upon you, and thanks for being able to pass on such emotional content so eloquently.
