Very old Hohner catalog from my collection.
« on: September 15, 2018, 05:47:10 PM »

I scanned a couple of pages from a old Hohner instructor/catalog that I thought might interest you folks.
The link is the cover but a bunch of the instruments are visible on subsequent images.

Some explanation is given for models with more than 12 bass buttons.

Nice to see the old catalog.. Wish they had the bass side on a Ha114  like the ones in the catalog with the buttons on bass rather than the spoons. ..

I have the same as the Hohner Student sitting on my shelf.. Same Red colour too. It still plays very well and in tune. I pick it up once in a while

Thanks for posting that.

I seem to have bought one of the items in your catalogue, the "Italian" variety nr 466, se photo. Haven't seen it IRL yet, it's still waiting for me to pick it up. Anyone seen or played this model ( 21 buttons, 12 basses) before?

Yes. Very beautiful woodwork for a Hohner, nice sound, handling is a bit slow due to dimensions, some of these were made with brass reeds and others with steel reeds. Don't necessarily discount the brass-reeded ones, they have a uniquely rich and sweet sound although the reeds may need more careful treatment in tuning and playing.

That's a real beaut!
Whenever I see such old instruments, it always makes me wonder where they've been all these years, and whatever happened to make the original owner abandon them to their box......forever?

Death has a way of adding a coda to one's box playing. From one box to another you see.

Thanks for the advice. It says "genuine steel reeds" on the box, so we'll see. I am more intrigued regarding the bass button system: Will it be something like the basque melodeons or more straight forward? Time will tell.
At the same internet auction I also bought this (see attachment)  gem, kind of a forefather to modern plastic Hohner pokerwork melodeons.

I'll bet they belonged to the same person.

Thank you Sir John for your usual uplifting ripost, so it's "Goodbye from me, and it's goodbye from him." eh?

Thanks,
As to provenience, yep, that's my guess as well. I'll keep you posted when I have seen them "in the flesh", hopefully this weekend. Any bright ideas as to bass tone system?

Thank you Scott. A really fine example of what brass reeds can do for the sound.

Makes me think of the book "Accordion Crimes" by Annie Proulx in which she follows the journey of a melodeon through the hands of many owners over many generations. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It reminds me that we're often the just the stewards of these boxes. I often wonder what stories some of my old boxes could tell.

Absolutely! Sorry to say Swedish auction people are rather sloppy as to provenience and, regarding melodeon boxes and other older freereeds, very unwilling of at least stating key(keys) or doing some test of working order. In this case they labeled both instruments as "not tested" . I actually called them and lured them into squeezing the items just a bit to prove that the reed stocks were still there...
Annie Proulx's book is a favourite, thanks for the reminder....

Funny thing that, Accordion Crimes was a book I just couldn't finish.

Is there a date anywhere on the Instructor/Catalogue?
I think my latest aquisition is a 490....an "Italian" 1 row model which was  still in production in 1929 - though I think the example I have may date to 1908-10.

I bought some pages from an early Hohner Catalogue off German eBay, but I'm damned if I can find them now

I wonder if any of models with "victrola horns" or "organ pipes" are surviving and playable and if they were indeed louder.

I was lucky enough to get a 1907 4 stop Echophone on EBay in German B. It played and IMHO did sound louder than a regular 10 button. The horn was dented so I had it refinished and while at it having it thoroughly restored with some French polish and a tune up at just intonation. Will post photos and video when completed.
