Conversion: Low notes to Accidentals?
« on: September 23, 2018, 04:03:41 PM »

I really really want to convert my trusty, original (and first box, bought new in early 1970's) Pokerwork from DG with low notes to DG "Anahata" layout, like my other boxes.  If it had the layout, I think I would play it more than the Tommy, it is so light and I don't worry about getting it dinged up, taking it outside, etc.  Plus the classic sound.
Layouts are attached.
I am told this is not as easy and cheap as one would think, as the reeds cannot be simply "slid" up to the right  and replaced with 4 new ones at the bottom.
Is there an alternative to resizing the reed block to fit the newly moved reeds, adjusting the air holes (?).
I don't want to crap it up.  I love this thing.  It has been dryed out, de-clackified, button padded.

Yes just move the reeds along one place.  On a DG there is usually plenty of space.  Check that the reed tongues and valves are all free to open and close.   The most you might need to do is to shave a little wood out of the top edge.

Since Hohner use the same blocks for all pokerworks the D/Gs usually have a length of 1/8" by 1/8" or so under the foot of the reeds, if this is removed the reeds fit really well when moved up a space.

Gents, that is very reassuring.  I had been warned doom and gloom about the reeds not fitting into narrower space, but they "looked OK to me". THANKS.
