Finding tunes that you hear
« on: September 25, 2018, 09:35:20 AM »

Hello, if I hear a tune that I don't know the name of, is there a search facility somewhere to help me find it, maybe by playing a few notes or typing in some ABC?

Thanks

Folktunefinder is pretty good, though I have defeated it once or twice! On the other hand, I have discovered some nice tunes among its suggestions that I wouldn't otherwise have come across.

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

Which reminds me, at Whitby Ann played a lovely tune which I asked the name of, and immediately forgot. It sounded French, but was from northern Europe I think, and was call either the hills, or the mountains of somewhere up there. Ann, can you remember which one it was?

There used to be an app that did this, didn't there? Am I misremembering? Ah yes, tunepal.org also on Android as Tunepal. Fascinating technology but a bit hit and miss of course.

The dots for On the Manchurian Hills ( Mantsurian Kukkuloilla) if the photo comes out ok ..... though my basses were much sparser than shown.

Finnish tunebook?

The chords notated as F (or F7) should be F# and in the last bar of the second line there's a full bar rest instead of a whole note rest.  Otherwise correct.

😊 thanks, I can't remember where the original photo got taken, must have been a year or so ago when I was looking for the dots to check against the tune in my head and came across someone with the music, I'll amend my print out copy. It's not in my only book of Finnish tunes, Veikko Ahvenainen's Harmonikat soimaan 11
