Tune of the Month for October 2018: Hesleyside Reel
« on: October 02, 2018, 09:40:25 AM »

Hi all, with apologies for the delay, this month's winner is

Hesleyside Reel - trad from Northumbria; here's a great version to learn it from by Gavin Atkin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8TStsxe3ws although I confess to also liking this slow version too... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELtqzqlbRJo, also Owen's version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nYYDt1ZMUU and Lester's most recent version here https://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.com/2018/09/tune-506-hesleyside-reel.html which has ABC on the page for those that want it.

Happy playing!

Cheers,

Clive

Three short versions, GD Pokerwork, straightforward, G 4 stop one row, CF Hohner with some chord variations and slightly slower.

All the best

Here's mine. I decided to play it with a dotted rhythm after hearing it come out that way on one of the website versions referenced.

Especially when played so beautifully - the C/F sounds lovely.

Ah so many good versions already. I especially enjoyed the CF version of folkbluesnbeyond as well as Mike's straightforward soundcloud recording. Both very inspiring to me. Will repair my Hohner Club II in C/F real quick and then record the tune on it. (:)

I'm loving the gentle refinement and varied harmonic treatments. Thanks very much for posting. Inspirational. We can be proud to play this instrument, with this example of musicianship to inspire us!

I'd like to point out that, as written, this tune falls entirely within a single octave, so if happen to have any other octaves available on your instrument, you could experiment with playing the tune there, too.

This thought applies to both high/low octaves within the keys of your instrument, as well as out of layout keys - for example, C on a DG box.

With a G Scale box it's playable in 3 octaves in G

Beautiful interpretation Saul. Not being rude but did you work it all out yourself or have you seen others play it in a similar way? I'm interested in learning from your style and the full range of bass notes approach that you use in this tune and try and apply it to others.

Many thanks

Well I think most of us recognise a basic chord structure, especially regarding that B chord... but this is really a result of noodling around. I just like discovering the full potential of a box - if you've got 12 basses I say use 'em!

Thanks for the great versions so far; here's mine.

Played in C on the G/C Hohner Lilliput converted by Kay Albrecht. What a great tune! Don't know why I've never really tried to play it before?

FAB!!! Did you dub some in?

Sorry, I don’t speak english very well... What do you mean by « dub some in »?..

xgx : I think you ask me about one video I play concertina. (Duet Concertina.. not easier than melodeon about ergonomic holding..)
