Shortening bellows
« on: October 03, 2018, 01:17:37 PM »

The problem is a badly leaky bellows at one end of an otherwise good condition Castagnari Hascy.

Rather than repair or perhaps replace the whole bellows, any comments on a suggestion to just remove the 3 or 4 damaged folds?

Can you?  Yes.

Should you?  No.

You run the risk then, of the reed blocks meeting while it is being played. This is not a good idea.

Agree with the other comments, especially about the reed blocks meeting. The Hascy is a really good instrument, so is definitely worth the investment of a new set of bellows from Galassi or Castagnari themselves. Alternatively Theo (who owns this site) will take accurate measurements and obtain and fit new Galassi bellows for you.

What is the damage causing these 3-4 folds to leak?  Maybe it could be repaired.

Thank you for the unequivocal replies. I will take on board the above advice.

The damage is caused by years of wear from the bellows being rested on the players leg when playing. It is just those 3 or 4 folds which have finally disintegrated after many years and many repairs.

I'm always game for a laugh, so, if you do replace them/it, I'd welcome the old bellows to a kindly new home?
