Liliput bits
« on: October 06, 2018, 10:33:50 AM »

I know it's a bit of a forlorn hope, but I was wondering if anyone has such a thing as a spare treble reed block for a Liliput.
When I took one apart to refurb, I found the original block has been damaged right from the off, and I don't know how it escaped the factory quality control. As it's a bit late to return it under warranty, I need to repair/replace said block.

Butcher that I am; I would just fill it with a touch of car body filler (the polyester stuff).

I don't think that looks too serious. I would attempt a repair using either cyano-acrylate superglue or PVA glue mixed with wood dust to fill in the damaged areas and then sand smooth and flush. Before applying the glue/wood dust mixture, I would perhaps rub a bit of wax (candle wax will do) to the surrounding areas where I didn't want the glue to stick.

Wood filler - you don't need to match the appearance. And I'd try to find a drill or dowel of the right size in the hole while applying the filler, to save having to tidy up the hole afterwards. Then sand flat.

Almost exactly my plan. I have also made a blank of the right size to fit in the reed holder space, to block the underneath too.

Is playing the melodeon actually just a gateway drug to carpentry?

Not just to carpentry, I can assure you! It's led me to spend more than I can afford on tools as well as bending my mind to make unearthly modifications! I think I'm a lost cause, this is what M.A.D. can lead to, be warned!!!

Two part filler is a good idea but I would go for wood filler rather than car body filler. I was a great fan of Cataloy in my car repairing days but it's too hard and unforgiving for woodwork. Proper wood filler is easier to work with and gives great results.

Probably cheaper too, seeing as you cannot (or couldn't) buy it in small enough quantities. I believe you can buy wood filler in small tubes?

Yes, Steve, thanks. And, being a Ronseal product, it probably does what it says on the pack!

I meant two part wood filler that will fill to any depth, it seems it only comes in largish quantities. Easy to work with and dries in thirty minutes regardless of how much is applied. I would expect wood filler in a tube to be used sparingly to fill coarse grain or minor blemishes, replacing missing wood is altogether different.

Ronseal two part wood filler.
