3 voice tuning
« on: October 11, 2018, 10:06:44 AM »

What are the options for tuning a 3 voice? Apart from the amount of offset etc, are there other options, like bandoneon tuning?
The reason I ask is that I have just acquired my first 3 voice box, a 1600 De Luxe Pre Corso, which is very much in need of a retune.

The Corsos I've see have all been MMM not LMM so bandoneon wouldn't be an option, if it were LMM you'd need a stop to take out the offset or tune  both M sets to TDC. MMM is a good oportunity to try your hand at Dedic/Vienese tuning.
I've never see a 1600 deluxe so perhaps this one does have a low reed set, that will be good fun!

Hi Sir John,

Bandoneon tuning only becomes available if you have the right sets of reeds: you need to have two sets of flute reeds and one set of bassoon reeds, sometimes described as LMM (i.e. one low and two medium sets) and you need to be able to switch out one set of the flute reeds, so that you are left with one set of bassoon reeds and one set of flute reeds (LM). If the reed sets are MMM, then bandoneon tuning isn't an option. Beyond that, I'll leave others more knowledgeable than I to explain the tuning options.

This will likely be MMM. A common Hohner tuning would be -20 0 +20 at A440Hz.

I've been experimenting with my MMM tuned to -10 0 +25 at A440Hz. So more sharp, less flat.
I can now hear two tremolos. It sounds kind of Colombian!

I would think that produces more tremolo than I like. Not being a great lover of tremolo at the best of times ;)

On some PAs, this asymmetric offset means that with the right switches, you can mix and match the three reed sets to get three different tremolos, plus the musette MMM sound.

That's what I hate, wet wet wet wobbly musette. Sets my teeth on edge it does, 'cos it sounds so out of tune.#

If you like your teeth that way, I've got a lovely Corso I could send you, and for not a lot of money, Sir John.
