Blowzabella jig - what key?
« on: October 11, 2018, 11:11:45 PM »

Blowzabella is around the web in various keys - in what key does it usually appear in sessions?

EFDSS Hardcore English has Blow Zabella in G. and the notes refer it back to mid eighteenth century collections Such as Aird, Walsh and Johnson. As its not a melodeon tune book..........

Aha! I thought it was Blowzabella not Blow Zabella - that makes searching much simpler.
Blowzabella (the band) play it in D and Gm.
Thanks!

Edited to add: that resulted in me discovering an excellent tune resource I didn't know about: http://richardrobinson.tunebook.org.uk

It certainly is a fabulous tune. My preference is to play it fairly slow and with lift. Key I play is in G.

We play it in D, though the local version in the Winder mss is in G. The traditional 5 part tune is all in one key, but if you want to play the modal 6th part (that I assume Blowzabella wrote?) then D will be much easier as you'll have the Cnat.

I've started experimenting with twice in G, twice in D and then a final time in Gm  >:E. The first two are easy enough but getting the Bb and appropriate basses at the right time is going to need a lot more work.

Thanks, but...

Old-school curmudgeon here...with the exception of this iPad.  I want to hear the tune from a player.  I'll spare all any further complaints.

No one picked up on query as to whether the sixth 'modal' part was written by Blowzabella themselves, presumably to make a nice 48 bar jig. Does anyone know?

Thanks for the Spotify links Dave. I have now listened to them and I was woah! I don’t play this tune anything like this!  I read some music I had and played in a slow Morris tune way....not that it matters.....well not to me 😊....I shall be playing both styles from now on.  I loved the French sound, I’m thinking this is the way it probably should be played....thoughts..

I'm not convinced that there's a "way it should be played" for any tune - it depends on the instrument, tastes, personality, mood, phase of the moon, etcetera. In a previous existence I played Blow Zabella (although I thought it was called Blowzabella) on Hurdy Gurdy and I doubt it had the same feel as on the Melodeon. I might throw it into the steady session in a couple of months and see what everyone makes of it.
