Liliput documentary
« on: October 14, 2018, 10:55:26 AM »

Having recently purchased my first Liliput I now completely understand the serious illness that seems to have infected so many inhabitants of this site. Namely the desire to own as many liliputs as your partner and or dwelling will tolerate.

To ease my symptoms till the next “fix” I looked on YouTube for films about these small boxes and their history and current popularity in the UK. All I found was a funny Hitler rant and a lot of tense looking gents playing some rather good tunes. I would be interested in seeing some videos on the process of liliput restoration that would help prevent amateurs like me thinking they might “have a go”. Are there any players out there who use them for their original purpose and take them hiking? What are the differences in playing a liliput versus more conventional boxes. Why do old /fat (like me) MORRIS men like them so much. Are they a good learning box? It would also be nice to get a contribution from the Hohner museum? Well just some thoughts if anyone out there is feeling a bit creative

I originally bought my Liliput because I was working away from home a lot and needed a small box to easily pack. It worked well for that purpose, and I have taken it on hols in campervan and on aircraft also.

Having had it tuned to play softly in hotels B&Bs etc, I've been told it's too quiet for Morris. Unlike Pikey of this parish, who has his set up to play loudly specifically for Morris.

It takes a few minutes to get my fingers used to the spacing, otherwise no real difference - the Liliput is a bit easier in confined spaces maybe. And IMO good for learning, although a restored one is usually above the "typical" learner's budget.

They are addictive but I don't think there's a Morris or waistline dependence, that perception may be more to do with the company you choose to keep  ;D  :M ;D

They are wonderful little boxes, and I can confirm that there is no "waistline dependence" as anyone who has met me can attest!

Thank you, Fred, the capitalisation threw me. But, that being the case, I'm still flustered. Never mind.

I can think of 3 reasons! They're light, have 2 reeds so you can tune them as wet or dry as you want, and are cool. Very cool.

Exactly!
And no manufacturer since has been able to make anything like it.

Has anyone actually tried?
Is there an untapped market of small 2-voice accordions or does the abundance of yet-to-be-restored liliputs/preciosas make a new production line not worth it?

 >:E a wet tuned Liliput bass note played with a steady pulsing rythmn is great as a Hurdy Gurdy impersonator/ medieval drone underneath medieval music  :|||: ;D
