Converting old Double Ray basses to modern style
(1/1)
IanK:
Hello
I have been a member here for a while but not posted before. I play B/C and a bit of single row D.
I would like to understand the optimum way to convert the old Hohner Double Ray basses (designed to play on the B row) to the modern style to play in D/G/A etc. with minimum pitch change in the reeds.
I think it might be
C/G - leave as C/G
B/F# - Tune to C/F
D#/G# - Tune to A/E
F#/E - Tune to D/G (noting E-D needs a shift of one tone)
Thanks
Theo:
That’s a sensible approach, but there is one other factor to consider. Usually C is the lowest pitch and bass B the highest, so if you tune the B up to C it will be an octave above the other C.
I have another mapping for the conversion which I will post later.
Theo:
This is what I do:
B/F# to A/E
F#/E to D/G
D#/G# to C/F (or change this to D/F, what is the point of two push Cs?)
C/G to C/G
More reeds to tune but most changes are down in pitch which can be done by tip loading with solder, and if you must have the C duplicated then they are in the same octave.

Many thanks for sharing this information.

Mine is a Double Ray Deluxe rather than a regular Double Ray.
Theo did this conversion for me a while back, very pleased with the results.
Does not get played so much now but that's only because a Gaelic IVS BCC# 37/96 is my main box.
