French Style CBAs
« on: October 17, 2018, 10:11:23 PM »

Hi all,

So, although I play B/C accordion these days, I played 5 row chromatic button accordion for about three years. I played a big converter bass job that was unwieldy and I eventually gave it up. I've been thinking about taking it up again to play French musette and other types of music, and I was thinking a French-style 4-row would be more up my alley. Maybe 80 bass? Something a lot lighter than my old 120 bass converter, especially since years of playing for a living have given me something of a bad back, weight will be a key factor.

Good new CBAs seem expensive but it looks like a secondhand bargain could be had in France. I was thinking I might drive over some time and look around for one. Does anyone have any idea of a) any good French accordion sellers, or b) good places to look at secondhand classifieds? Is the CBA most common in any particular region? Also, anyone know what makes/models might fit my bill? It has to be a good instrument, the boxes I play now have me spoiled! I'm thinking 3 voice LMM bdw.

Thanks in advance,

Luke.

Hi,

You could always give a go at leboncoin.fr, it's where most of the French people post their classified ads. If ever you need a native speaker to review an ad, do not hesitate to ask!

Also, there may be some vendors you could contact, depending on where in France you'd want to go. Where do you live?

Thanks! I live in Ireland. I'm not sure when I'd get over, i'm in the middle of a post grad but i thought I'd start looking into it.

I had a quick look on leboncoin, i should narrow it down to an area near the ferry

Hopefully someone'll have an idea of what the market is like there n have pointers about what instruments are a good buy too!

I found a few in the region that Roscoff is, I think they're two voice but look good apart from that.

Thanks for the name Rees!

OK, then if your ferry lands (do we say land for a boat?) in Roscoff, here are a few vendors that you might contact just in case (I don't know how your French is, neither how their English is) :

http://www.bernardaccordeon.com/
http://www.saintfiacre-accordeon.fr/-occasion-
https://lechatluthierbreton.com/occasions-accordeons/
http://www.atelierdelaccordeon.com/categorie-produit/accordeons-doccasion/
(These 4 are not that far from Roscoff.)

If you go a bit further, you might want to check also :

http://www.loric-accordeons.com/#Vente%20Occasions
http://www.laboiteabretelles.fr/12-chromatiques
http://www.pianoabretelles.fr/accordeons-chromatiques-d-occasion/
https://fonteneau-accordeons.fr/collections/occasion

All are within a 3-hours drive from Roscoff.

Some second-hand on their website are expansive, but they might have some cheaper models not listed online.

Cheers

Great stuff, I had a look through those sites. Definitely some higher end stuff but good to get a feel for things. Thanks for the input.

I'll have a trawl through leboncoin over the next while and mull it all over. There's definitely some bargains to be had in France. Maybe i'll bring back a few cases of wine and try to offset the ferry fare  ;)

I second this advice. Leboncoin is a good blend of honest things for sale often at realistic prices.

Have a chat with geoff de limousin over on https://www.accordionists.co.uk

Geoff's probably better known by his real name ...in the concertina world and as a Uilleann pipe maker ;)

You are welcome to stay and play melodeon with me France St Sever Calvados. My local happy cash has a CBA for sale at the mo. They have some from time to time as Vire has an accordeon school. They quite often advertise on boincoin. I will have a look next time I go to Vire. Dave Joly I think is in Rennes about 1 hr. Dont forget Ebay.fr. Its not such a good idea to post the big bass ends unpacked but if needed i am happy to receive post here.
