Creating a Hohner Erika club DG
« on: October 19, 2018, 01:05:34 PM »

Sorry for the offtopic questions:
Which tuning has it been before? CF? Just wondering because I recently bought an Erika and it's in Bb/Eb ... wondering what to do with it, as it's not a tuning I've had much contact with so far.

Keep it! Bb/Eb is a lovely pair of keys and increasingly popular amongst English players, so much so that Bb/Eb sessions are regularly being programmed at festivals around the country.

Should you find it's not for you I'm sure you'll find someone only too willing to take it off your hands.... :|glug

I had a Bb/Eb Club II converted to D/G and it's a sweet sounding box.

As you seem to have experience with it, would you give me some pointers as to which tunes I should try out in those keys? I mean, sure, I could just transpose other tunes I already know. But if there are some that are specifically written in Bb or Eb, I'd be interested to give them a shot. (:)

I think what Baz does, and certainly what I do, is simply play a tune that you'd normally play on a DG box - same fingering/push pulls etc - and it'll be transposed by the nature of the instrument into the relevant BbEb key.
I tend to go for slower tunes and just drink in the lovely lower rich sounds...…

Alternatively, you can play in the BbEb keys. I have tried on a particular tune, but of course it means learning a whole new keyboard layout of Bb and Eb. Subsequently gave up and I simply use it as a 'transposing ' instrument and play my normal DG tunes on it using my DG fingering.
Give it a go with one of your regualr tunes and see what you make of it!
cheers

Ah ok, thanks for the insights.

I will definitely give it a go.

Biggest problem right now are leaking bellows, so I'll have to fix that first. (Or replace altogether, not sure...)

Sorry if I'm hijacking a bit, but I've been wondering.
Is it easier to convert C/F to D/G or Bb/Eb to D/G? How about if you convert to 4th button start instead of 3rd?

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?

C/F to D/G if you go 4th button start is fairly simple, never tried Bb/Eb to D/G

Keep it as Bb/Eb its a lovely key on a melodeon. Whatever you do DON'T change it to D/G.
Bb/Eb is a getting to be a very popular key again.
Try playing some military marches....something like Handels March from Scipio, it sounds gorgeous...especially when you have a brass accompaniment.

Yes, what they said. Bb/Eb will be become scarce and that would be a shame. Convert a C/F, there are thousands of them.
I may have some C/F blocks to swap with you.

Ah I'm not really looking into converting. The initial question was more about what to do with a Bb/Eb Erika.
Having swapped the leaking bellows with others, I have to say the sound is great - rich and earthy. I like it.  :||:

Keep it in Bb/Eb and play it, or else sell it to me.  >:E

This tune, https://youtu.be/Nk8PETN2jKo  played here by Lester of this parish on the 1 row, is made for the Bb/Eb box...

Yes, Old Grenadier is a belter on a BbEb.
I love playing Tiptop Polka on it too. Nice and slow and with feeling, and have a mental image of the Baccup Coconut dancers in mind. When I've seen them at a festival, they dance to a gloriously sounding brass band so feel the BbEb fits hand in glove with the tune.
Some tunes seem to sit perfectly on a lower pitched box, perhaps those tunes originally composed or played on brass instruments?
