Squeaky air button
« on: April 27, 2021, 11:15:43 PM »

The air button/lever on my Pokerwork is a little squeaky. I suppose it probably can't be heard by anyone else, but it's a little distracting to me as I play. Is it safe to use any kind of lubricant on the lever hinge and spring, or will that put Lester into conniptions again? ;) What can I do to quiet it?

Yes - locksmith's graphite powder on the hinge and/or spring coils. This sort of thing:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Locksmiths-Lock-Lubricant-Graphite-Lubrication/dp/B008OH957A
Mix a slurry of graphite powder with methylated spirit and apply with a small artist's paint brush or make-up brush. The meths will carry the graphite into where it's needed and then evaporate leaving the graphite in place.

Or instead of graphite, you can use PTFE dry lubricant spray. Apply using a small brush as above. The solvent will evaporate and leave the PTFE in place.

The main thing to avoid is lubricating oil or grease which will attract dust and muck over time, and cause a sticky mess.

But before applying anything you should work out exactly where the noise is coming from. With a Hohner air valve it can be from the pivot or spring which are very close together, or from the button rubbing on the wooden end plate.  If it’s the latter you can sometimes stop the noise by bending the lever so that the button is in the centre of the slot.

Yes, lever bending usually works, no lubrication needed.
