This month's worthy winner:

Adieu les Filles de Mon Pays - if ever there was an appropriate month to do this, this would be it - the tune to a french anti-war song, here played by Bob https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njsFCq_HKzo ; quite a popular tune in French sessions played as a slow march. Here's as close to a source recording as we're going to get - played by bagpipe duo Eric Montbel and Jean Blanchard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlDYGXPIF9M

With thanks to Greg, here's some music notation/ABC http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=www.banjolin.co.uk/tunes/abcs/adieulesfille/0000

Thanks folks looking forward to hearing what you can do with this!

Hi all - here you go

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWfbg-TRMx0

Have known this tune for a while; first learned it in the Nottingham french music sessions when they used to be in the Nottingham Playhouse, a *long* time ago. The original idea was to play this all the way through with no basses, but I wasn't quite brave enough for that. We're in D on a D/G Castagnari Giasco I; usually in sessions it's played in G of course.

After listening to some recordings (including this one, by a group of musicians calling themselves Duo Synkro,  I decided I wasn't keen on those dots and produced these, that I prefer. The dots aren't the tune. Just a map.

Thanks, X marks the spot, so to speak: this is far more inkeeping with what I have been hearing. But, I think you may have an errant duplicate coconut added in, the 3rd and 4th last bar of the last line duplication seems amiss. (this being a 9 bar line)

Thanks Gena, corrected. The moral of the story is still what I said: "Dots are a map, not the tune"

Can anyone point me to the words of this? Queer, but though it's an anti-war song, it sounds as if it would be good to march to!

winston - https://www.lyrics.com/lyric/26598450
use Google translate to get it in English.
I wouldn't call it an anti-war song  like the 1960s protest songs.
It's more of a lament at going away.

Is this the original setting? I find that difficult to come to terms with given the slow march renditions  I have heard.

"winston - https://www.lyrics.com/lyric/26598450"

I'd come across that in my searching, ursamyna. But thought that it mustn't be the same song, as the title is different. After listening to the accompanying sound track, I cannot change my mind. It sounds like a completely different song and tune.
But thanks for trying.

Actually, after reading it through again, this morning; it doesn't even seem like a "going away" song, either. It's more the mental meanderings of someone who wants to have sex with under-age girls but is thwarted by social mores. (Is it right that there is no lower age limit for sexual activity in France?)

The lyrics, as posted by our esteemed Bob Ellis back in 2013...
Adieu, les filles de mon village;
Adieu, les jolies filles de mon cher pays;
Adieu, le charmant voisinage;
Adieu, la belle douce compagnie.
C'est aujourd'hui que nous partons;
Allons-y voir nos maîtresses.
C'est aujourd'hui que nous partons;
Allons-y voir nos maîtresses.

Mon cher amant, tu m'y laisses et tu t'en vas;
Tu ne me laisses donc rien pour gage?
Mon cher amant, tu m'y laisses et tu t'en vas;
Tu ne me laisses donc rien pour gage?
Oh je t'y laisserai mon manteau,
Et mon épée en héritage.
Oh je t'y laisserai mon manteau,
Et mon épée en héritage.

De ton manteau, je ne me soucie,
De ton épée en héritage;
De ton manteau, je ne me soucie,
De ton épée en héritage;
Mais j'aimerais mieux, oui, cent fois mieux,
Que tu me prennes en mariage.
Mais j'aimerais mieux, oui, cent fois mieux,
Que tu me prennes en mariage.

Adieu, les filles de mon village;
Adieu, les jolies filles de mon cher pays;
Adieu, le charmant voisinage;
Adieu, la belle douce compagnie.

I look forward to some recordings...

I know I've posted this link elesewhere, but in my opinion this more truly represents the spirit of the tune. Ignore the first two minutes; the playing is very out of sync, but thereafter it is much better.

I think it also fits with the sentiments expressed in the words which Julian has posted.

Now that's more like what I was expecting, but I'm struggling to see it as an anti-war song, more just a parting song.
Thanks Steve, once again!

I agree it's no more anti-war than 'Pack up yer troubles in yer old kit bag...' which was (reputedly) sung by British troops going off to WW1. But both songs have become subsequently charged with the additional poignancy, with hindsight of how terrible and futile the whole business was.

Anti- war or not, whenever I look at war memorials here or in France (which lost a much higher proportion of their population in WW1 than the UK), this tune always comes to mind and my playing of Adieu tonight and on Sunday will be akin to that of the link posted by Steve. I hope to record it later - but certainly won't inflict my singing on anyone !

Thanks Greg for posting your approach to the ABC of that tune. I've used them as a foundation for my own rendition.

https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/adieu-les-filles-de-mon-pays-take-2

I'm not happy that this song won, to be quite frank. It's not my music and I did not find it particularly challenging to learn. Off to ThotM with me, so that I can find other challenges. (:)
