Button Box Linnets in DG
« on: November 02, 2018, 04:17:56 PM »

I expect folks have already seen this, but I was interested to see that they are producing an awfully decent DG box for $600, with case and straps, including shipping, and if in US, not in MA, no tax.  Yipes.

I think she still lives with PA.

MA = Massachusetts. East coast of the USA. Where Boston is. A fine city.  (:)

Dick, you're too quick for your own good!

Thanks Steve. As you know, I'm easily confused.

As am I.  Around here Ma and Pa always go together.  Here's video evidence with the lead taken on a Steirische box:  https://youtu.be/AVJas07y4Iw

Wow! Thanks for that, Dick.

After the first couple of bars, I thought, "So that's what Helicon basses really sound like!" but then I saw the tuba, what a let down.

However, the Steirische box does look fabulous.

Here's a raw street clip with the bass side well represented:  https://youtu.be/W949WPrWtME

You should hear the bigger Slovenian-American button box clubs from Pennsylvania (PA), Ohio (OH),
Minnesota (MN), Nebraska (NE) and California (CA).  When you get 10-30 boxes all at once the massed basses are amazing.

I live in MN and have spent 50+ years playing the music of the various immigrant communities with and for their musicians and celebrations.  The common theme would be waltz, polka and schottische whether Scandihoovian, German, Czeck/Slovene or Polish...with a few community-specific variants and specialties.  I think I'm either the only one...or the last one...using 21/8 boxes to cover them all.

Danger: Pedant alert!
When the US Post Office changed to ZIP codes in 1963 (?) it was part of a change to an automated, for the time, sorting system software.  This was the OLD DAYS;  could not have more than 23 characters in the city + state + zip code line.  So the 2-letter code system was implemented.  "Some" states were happy, i.e. no change from usual practice, e.g. N.Y. > NY.  Some standardized, e.g. N. Car. or No. Car. > NC.  Some were traumatized: Penn. or Penna. > PA.  People in Arkansas did not like it much Ark. > AR.  Also, as I remember Delaware not happy with Del. > DE.  Nebraska got pushed around; Neb. or Nebr. was changed to NB but a few years later, the Canadians asked it be changed to avoid confusion with their change for New Brunswick.  So NB > NE.
END of ALERT.

Unfortunately  (for me) .. tuning is Tremolo Americano.. ie  wetter than swing  or demi swing or dry etc.
I have been told that this is because it is easier to make them Trem Am because the average ear cannot really pick out the inequalities if inexact tuning as much as if it was drier.

"DRY" tuning being more difficult and time consuming.

I don't know if the reason for wet tuning is ease, rather than taste. Wet is definitely louder too, although not as penetrating. For me, wet is an immediate turn off, but it wouldn't stop me choosing a box and paying for a drier tuning.

Agreed if the cost was nominal.

Swing tuning as a default tuning would have been my choice. Offends no one  : )

Pete, the Panthers (maybe you have had one) are a beast.  It was my first 3-row and a good a value I admit.  But the Linnets sound and feel much more like your Ericas/Pokerworks.
