Anyone Recognise these Spanish Waltzes?
« on: November 07, 2018, 01:18:46 PM »

I've just completed the transcription from a field recording of a set of three Spanish Waltzes played by Harry Cockerill. When I put them in folktunefinder.com, nothing comes up for any of them. Does anyone recognise any of them? If not, I suppose they could have been composed by Harry himself, but I suspect not.

They're all awfully familiar sounding - or maybe just a bit too predictable? In the third tune, remove the note doubling in the first part and add a couple of notes in the third bar and you have something very like the air of that archetypal nameless Varsovienna tune, you know, the one that people call Varsovienna or similar names.

I see what you mean, but it isn't Varsovienne. Harry Cockerill played Varsovienne on another track of the same field recording and this is clearly a different tune with a different feel to it.

Some of these Spanish Waltz tunes sound familiar to me, but I don't know whether that is because I know them from elsewhere or because I am remembering them from attending dances in the 1970s and 1980s when Harry played them.
