That's a very slick and professional demonstration Roger, but it's just not like the 'real thing', clouds of acrid smoke, constant coughing, the eye watering and the odd flare up as the poker dwells too long in the firegrate! How do you find the tone compares without the wash of wax all over the reedplates suppressing the higher frequency overtones, it can't be as mellow, surely ?

More seriously, you may end up as chief evangelist for the church of the Latter Day Spooners  ;)

I have one of those spoons, but never knew quite how it was supposed to be used! Thanks for this!

I would call it a spatula. The spoon is a different tool, as I understand it.

I don't know how many times I've watched that video, but I find it very satisfying! That's obviously the quickest way to wax onto removed blocks, and the person makes it look so easy, too.

Thanks for posting it again, Pearce.

But where's the video of waxing the treble reeds in a 114? Now that would be really interesting to watch! (Especially if I had an anorak to wear, sad beggar that I am, hehe!)

Well it’s the 'tool' I’ve seen used in Italian factories, often described as a spoon. Charlie sells them here...

Yes, that’s the tool that I’ve always wanted, but I’ve never been able to find one.

Not arguing at all. I use those terms to distinguish between the different methods.
Thanks for your video demonstration...very useful.

I use a "spoon", but I can see the advantages of the "Flat" spoon, for something like a Liliput, where there is much less space around the reed plates.

I made one out of 0.4mm brass sheet, though I should have put a longer handle on it.

I too have made my own, from sheet metal, as well as the "German spoons" which Olav Bergflødt uses. The length of handle needed depends, I think, upon the depth of your wax pot. I made my first one a bit short, and when I reached over to pick it up, the fingertip immersion in hot wax wasn't too pleasant.

I agree with Edward, very satisfying to watch. On a side note, have you ever looked up "unsatisfying videos"? very disturbing. I think that I have all the tools to make a nice version of this spoontula with a comfortable handle. I'll post pics when it's done.

I like the look of that. So, we have spoon, spatula and spoontula; what are we to call this?

Maybe the Dunkspoon, or Dunktula?
Dunkspat doesn't sound right somehow!

Ah, it's not of my making or design so shouldn't be named after me. It was made by forum member 'an bosca ceoil', I bought my reed wax from him and my first Liliput. He disappeared from here and hasn't logged in for over four years, his FaceBook account has disappeared too. What about waxing pen?

It looks like a paint brush with the bristles removed and the metal sleeve cut at an angle. Very neat.

Yes, very cool. I may have to do some experimenting with the making of something similar.

I thought that, but it would be unusual for a paint brush or an artist's brush to have a copper ferrule wouldn't it? I assumed it was made from micro-bore copper tubing crimped onto a dowel handle.
