Smuggling another one into the herd - an experiment
« on: November 16, 2018, 05:35:59 PM »

Nowadays I have a (fairly) strict one in one out policy and as of this morning there is a melodeon that is 'just visiting' but which may become a permanent resident*.

I have decided not to announce the coming of this box but merely to slip in onto a cupboard top where another melodeon currently resides.   On the principle that the best place to hide something is (sometimes) in plain sight I have placed it there and will say nothing of its presence... how long do you think I will get away with this ruse for children?

* in the sense that you can ever own a melodeon. My view is that you merely rent them from the universe for a time before moving them on.

Out of curiosity: Do you have a list of your boxes somewhere? Or do you try to keep this information undisclosed for reasons that I might very well understand?

Blimey I don't have that many  ;D Also, my partner is a melodeon player so there is no reason to hide them. 'Tis but an experiment.

I consider him perfectly capable of carrying out the converse experiment - ignore it and pretend he hasn't seen it. Would a few hints as to make and model damage the experiment, does one think?

I'm afraid with out a double blind control any outcome from the experiment will be spurious at best  8)

Hmm... I don't think he will do that. To add a bit of spice to the mix it is the same make and model (though different wood) as one I sold a few months back.  Still nestling safely, secreted between my Streb and his Bb/Eb Preciosa, as yet undetected.

Helena, it's a rocky road and that's exactly how I ended up with a melodeon shop!

Have you thought of saying that you reckon he needs another box ? (Here am I still hiding my latest purchase after several weeks...I mean...melodeons all look and maybe sound the same to fiddle players...!)

I'm always amazed how your spouses/partners don't know that you're spending money on these instruments. I expect it's not as if they're only 20 quid or something.

My wife, who doesn't play the melodeon but who has spent over 30 years developing a critical eye, suggests that the trick is not to keep them together in one place, but to spread them around the house in the hope that she'll think she's seeing the same one twice. It's got harder since she retired and now has first sight of any parcels arriving.

Having slipped it into the herd it will be fine.
It will quickly be allowed to stay as it'll develope herd immunity.

Well, for double blind to work you really need a placebo.  I struggle with the concept, never mind the reality, of a placebo melodeon.

It's called a Streb.

Yes - in agreement with this. Even more so for concertinas.

I had a spouse who referred to my accordion activities as "that behavior."  No longer a spouse.

I use the excuse 'oh that's just a cheap doer upper which I will eventually sell at a good profit so it won't really cost anything!
