Poll: Tune of the Month for December 2018
« on: November 25, 2018, 07:46:11 AM »

Hi all - here we go again!

Paddy Carey's - last month's runner up, a 48 bar jig with plenty of drive; is it English, or Irish? Well, no-one really knows but it's certainly popular in England. Fits beautifully on one row. And here's Chris Wood and Andy Cutting playing it - it's the first tune here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct-oGOAQAzk

Plant un Cao - I must confess, I thought this was Plante un Chou, but a quick google shows me to be wrong! Traditiional Auvergne schottische... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AQB5Md_lxI

Hogmanay Jig - very seasonal of course, is this great jig from Andrew Rankine, a Scottish accordionist and band leader. Here's Anahata's version https://youtu.be/kAI9dHMxtvw?t=65

Italian Rant - thanks for the suggestion Pete, good one! This is a playford tune - here's a version I rather liked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlA0RGHehpY ; you can find ABC here on Pete's original post
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,3033.msg275733.html#msg275733

Hobed o Hilion - bonus one this month (because I missed that Pete had done a recording for us - oops!), from the playing of Huw and Tony Williams - https://app.box.com/s/ocv0s10jowhzvcq1nx58hdjisn8nqcmo in A minor and https://app.box.com/s/frslut1mgmhuk20aba1b99ls7nwdx5t2 in E minor . ABC and more details on the thread here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,3033.msg274822.html#msg274822

Thanks all; get voting!

Wow. I've been obsessed with Italian Rant for the past three weeks. May have to actually get a video done. Turns out it's even older than Playford, so was clearly a long popular tune when he started putting the collections together -- La Mantovana.

Plant un Cao - I must confess, I thought this was Plante un Chou, but a quick google shows me to be wrong!

Clive: Are you saying they are two separate tunes, or that Plante un Chou should really be called Plant un Cao?

There are two related, but different settings on line. Plante un Chou and Plant un Cao?

Plantes Un Chou is French for Plant A Cabbage. Plant Un Cao seems to be the name it is known by in Ireland but it doesn't seem to be good Irish. Mind you, that's only according to Google. Real people may know different. I suspect the difference is down to Chinese whispers.

Chou I know, but what is Cao ? Dialect presumably. (Always liked the tune anyway !)
Italian Rant is very much on my 'tunes to get to performance' list, and if it won I'd have even more incentive...so hard choice for me.

From what I can tell (in all of a 5 minute google), I had the original name wrong (and I've been playing this tune for years). I expect it's a regional dialect thing.

The guy who's playing it say Plant un Cao, with a hard C (K) sound. He sounds French so I would assume he doesn't mean chou pronounced shoe.

I assumed that “Plant un cao” was Occitan for “Plante un chou”.

and a distinctly unthoughtful one from Gaderene

I'm trying to work out how I can run with Gaderene's approach (they're a great band of fine musicians, well worth taking a really good look at).

As it's more or less the origin for the local anthem, I'm going to sit this one out.

It might be a good tune, but as the Israeli national anthem is based on this tune (through some eastern European tune) it breaks my brain to listen to it and I prefer not to play it. I suspect it's not an accident that God Save the Queen was never the ToTM. ;)

Ah! You live and learn.
Funnily enough, I've always thought the Israeli effort well above the average when I've heard it played next to others, at sporting events and the like. I've never felt that about GSTQ or the Stars and Stripes (star spangle thingy, or whatever it's called).

Seems like a good reason to play it completely differently to that way.

How about this? The beauty of some really  good tunes is that they can survive just about anything you chuck at them. This is good.

It's definitely a decent tune, although slightly more sombre than other anthems I suppose.
Funnily enough I quite like the tune of GSTQ myself. I do agree about the American one, it is too American to my taste...

It's those damn 6 opening notes. My brain refuses to connect them with anything else.
Don't worry though, I do have plans for the theme of the month, so I'm not going to lazy around throughout December.  :||:

 :D

Just a thought, though, before I head off to bed. It's based on a discussion with Rob Harbron about tune writing.

If you don't get switched on by a tune, for whatever reason,  you can always have fun turning it into something else. Jiggify it, hornpipe it minor to major it or just turn it upside down, or back to front.

The tune for the "too American star spangled thingy" was lifted from a British musical society:

There was an American chap turned it into something quite decent back in the 60s and brought it back here. Now what was his name? Henries? Heinrichs?
