Tune of the Month for December 2018: An Italian Rant
« on: December 01, 2018, 02:14:31 PM »

Afternoon all - this month's winner is this quirky little beast:

Italian Rant - thanks for the suggestion Pete, good one! This is a playford tune - here's a version I rather liked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlA0RGHehpY ; you can find ABC here on Pete's original post
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,3033.msg275733.html#msg275733

Looking forward to hearing efforts as ever!

Cheers,

Clive

I changed a few of the chords, but tried to retain the quirky motion of the given harmony. Perhaps overworked, but in part to prevent it from lapsing into a faux Border Morris thrash, (although it might fit well in that context). There is an out-take included (for the sake of it).

Yeah, those chords for the linked ABC notation seem pretty off. Rather a lot of C chords for a tune that presents itself as Em. So, if anyone out there really benefits from some chord hints, much like I used to, I would take those ones with a rather large grain of salt.

Anyway, being that I play for a Border side, hopefully I'll be able to have some fun with this one.

edit - Following up the reference to the player in the youtube video being a member of Boggarts Breakfast, they share a musical score of this tune on their website that might provide an insight to the chords they were using (since they're out of frame). Here's the tune on their site: http://www.boggartsbreakfast.org.uk/wp/2015/11/happy-birthday-gogs/ - though, you'll probably want to skip the the introduction bars harkening to our short friends in the chocolate factory.

I suspect Andy Cutting plays this with a lot of C chords. It's something he quite likes to do.

For some reason I only just got around to enjoying this. Your chord  make sense and I find what you say about avoiding the border morris thrash interesting. That's just what I've been developing. I think it works...now I need an opportunity to record it. It will almost certainly be more vulgar than this.

I'm looking forward to someone posting a one row version.

OK -- I was going to try to do a melodeon only version, but was sufficiently happy with this -- playing with my DH on his one-off hybrid 12-string/cittern.

Sufficiently happy...yes!  I just wish your RH was pointed at the mic a bit more.

Lovely stuff Joan :) Good to see the Oakwood is settling in well. Seeing you and Jesse reminds me of happy summer days together - same time next year?

Helena -- yes, but also well before that. We'll be over in April with time before we have to be at Halsway for the Euro weekend. Will be in touch.

I'm finding it harder and harder to get time to do these :-)

Here's mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh55IusjwvU

I'm on the Bb/Eb Preciosa, and in F minor (so equivalent of A minor on a D/G box). Lots of drone basses as you'd expect...

Here's a rather slow approach towards this month's tune.
I've been playing it with steady bass, unisonoric bass, upbeat bass and many other bass variations. I feel like this tune is pretty versatile and I've enjoyed learning it. Nice one for the repertoire!  :||:

Nicely done. Steady, rather than slow I would have thought.
What are your basses?

I just played what sounded good to me. Let me think about this for a second and note it down:

P:A
|: e | C e | D e | B e :|
P:B
|: e G | a e | e C | D G | G D | D e |
 e | C e | D e | B e :|

Last two bars could also be played
| D D | D e |
or
| D G | B e |
or any variation of that. :D

I was intrigued by your mention of unisonoric basses

[they seem ideal for a tune like this]

Ah sorry Greg, I may have baited you with my mention of unisonoric basses there. My recording obviously does not make use of them at all, I went with a more "traditional" approach. However, often enough I find myself playing the melody over a constantly held C chord, only altering the basses a little bit in a staccato fashion. Currently my calender is all filled up but maybe I'll get around to record the tune again and then I might deliver what I promised earlier. ;)

And here comes another version of the song:

https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/italian-rant-take-3

This time played a bit differently:
One time without basses
One time with unisonoric chord (C)
One time with constant bisonoric chord (E pull and B push) and changing bass notes as played in Take 2

Enjoy!
