Poll: Tune of the Month for January 2019
« on: December 27, 2018, 10:59:43 AM »

Hi all - hope you had a great Christmas! This month's selection

Paddy Carey's - last month's runner up, a 48 bar jig with plenty of drive; is it English, or Irish? Well, no-one really knows but it's certainly popular in England. Fits beautifully on one row. And here's Chris Wood and Andy Cutting playing it - it's the first tune here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct-oGOAQAzk

The Lounge Bar - recently appeared on Mel Biggs' youtube channel, this lovely slow jig was written by Annlaug Borsheim. Here's Annlaug (on Hardanger) playing it with Rannveig Djönne https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsMniutrofI and here's Mel's version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTIBk6enOQE . Needs a low B ideally for that initial note, but I'm sure that could be replaced with a D or G if you don't have it.

Rosbif Waltz (or Philippe Krumm's) - also on Mel's site is this wonderful waltz collected in France by my Rosbif chums a *long* time ago, and recorded on their classic 'Bourree a Six' album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LLZm93g530 . I've seen sites calling this Au Cafe du Canal, but I'm not convinced - it seems quite different to me, although the chord sequences are similar. I seem to remember Alan Day saying they got it off Philippe Krumm, but have no idea where he got it.

Tom Tolley's - with apologies, I am *really* raiding Mel's channel this month! Trad English, and one you'll hear around sessions a bit (I do anyway) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5ugPr5Gv-0

Happy voting, and happy new year!

Seeing as I've just, this minute, come from speaking to an ex-Rosbif melodeonist at my front door, I feel inclined to vote for their "Rosbif Waltz (or Philippe Crumm's)". Whether I'll get to try it or not is another matter, though!

The Lounge Bar is by far and away my favourite this month, what a delightful tune.

If we're going to get partisan, Tom Tolley's (aka Tom Fowler's) is a great tune. Have a listen to it played by a couple of master's of the genre

I'm glad you posted that, Greg. It has reminded me that I first learned Tom Fowler's from the playing of Brian Peters, later reinforced by Anahata's and Mary's wonderful playing that you linked to.

In the intervening years, I got caught up with Tom Tolley's which has become almost ubiquitous in the sessions I attend. Tom Fowler's doesn't have that extra bit of repeated rhythm in the B-music, but hearing it afresh, I find that I actually prefer it (Tom Fowler's). However, trying to play Tom Fowler's in a session is almost certainly a lost cause, as just about everyone in the room will play the Tom Tolley B-music regardless.  ::)

I can't get over how Anahata and Mary basically turn this into a string duet with cello-like counter melodies traded between them. Inspirational!

Thank you both  :|bl
That's an ancient arrangement that has been a prototype for many tune arrangements we've played since.
We got that version of the tune (the straight 32 bars) from the resident musicians of the Islington Folk Club, and they claim it was from Winder, but every book or ABC I've seen has the extra 4 bars in the B music. I'd love to see an independent source of our version.
There's a Welsh version called Tom Tollins too...

Peter, Is your abc correct as both versions seem to be in G. Also, the last 4 bars of the first version seem to be in D?
The abc that I use is shown below, which I think is closer to what Annlaug Børsheim plays.
Lovely tune though. The tied notes make all the difference, though they took me some time to play them correctly.
Cheers
Hugh

Rosbif Waltz....I find myself quite drawn in to this tune, it is fun to play and the rhythm turns and turns as the dancers would in a French waltz. Mel's version is lovely and makes me want to play it more.
But there is this suggestion that it is also called by the name "Au Café du Canal", which was written by Pierre Perret. Having found a recording of him singing this song, I can hear many similarities to Rosbif Waltz but also very many differencies. Did the person (who was that?) who wrote Rosbif Waltz just 'steal it' or has it just changed over the years as folk music does?
Does anyone know? And who is, or was Philippe Krumm? Surely not the American composer who wrote the piece for clocks?

Here is Pierre Perret singing his song...the video is, well, a bit French but most will enjoy that!  :|bl   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GpYOLp39B8

We learned this unnamed waltz from the playing of "Paris Centre", who were Philippe Krumm on melodeon and announcements, Patrick Arguence on hurdy-gurdy and Jean Bonnard on cabrette. They specialised in music from the Auvergne.
It is just listed as "waltz". If we had a name for it we would have given it.
