Yes folks, despite the fact that I've played just about every Christmas tune I know over the years, it is December, and when it's December we will do festive things. So anything related to Christmas, winter or anything similar. If you are Australian, you could of course subvert this theme wonderfully. And even if you're not Australian, you could still subvert it by referring to the Australian season and doing something ridiculously summery. All's fair here, and the more tangential the better.

Happy Christmas and a Merry new year (when it comes)

Clive

I live in the mountains and was planning to record a tune about snow, but the snow hasn't arrived yet; it's just raining.  So, whilst I wait for the snow here is "Rain on the Woodpile" by Rob Harbron, from the Leveret release "Inventions".

Snow tune to follow later in December!

I wondered whether this might be a mince pie too far when I embarked upon it. 'Christmas Eve' by Tommy Coen arranged to fit onto an elderly, wheezy 4 stop in G, (the street box), which may be rewarded with a visit to the fettler for spot tuning when the festive outings are over. There is an outtake (with all the stops out).

I never used to "get" 114s but I do now. I so want one of these.
Beautifully done. Just tell yourself the occasional slightly off note adds to the character.

My favourite seasonal tune, from the Shetland Islands - 'Christmas Day i'da Moarnin'.
Reputedly, the tune was played by the fiddler Fredaman Stickel (spelling ?), to his laird, on Christmas Day.

I have spent the week working on this tune.   (:)
Nice treatment of one of my favourite Christmas tunes, Julian.
I found this somewhere:

"Dis is anidder een o' Fredamann Stickle's.  He wes wint to play
dis een to da Laird o' Buness every Christmas moarnin an some
say he bedd maist o' da day dere playin to da Laird an da folk
he hed bidin wi him.  I was telt dat Stickle composed dis t\"un
as he walked alang frae his hoose in Burrafirth ta Buness.  Dey
were nae roads danadays, just sheepgaets.  Apparently he wis
nicknamed Stumpie, maybe because dere wis something wrang wi wan
o' his feet.  Da t\"un fits in at an uneven walkin speed an says
at da end o' it, "Christmas Day ida Moarnin."

Here's mine for this month - I'm seriously running out of material for the Christmas theme, so I've resorted to writing something and giving it a name to fit the theme :-)

This is a 5/4 waltz, played in C minor on a Bb/Eb Preciosa.

OK, I'm stretching the remit a bit, but think of Dickens, M.R. James and the winter traditions of ghost stories (I've almost convinced myself).

This is 'Ghosts' by Albert Ayler, albeit my interpretation. It's a tune I use to play a lot and have youtubed before but, after several years of disuse I suddenly thought 'I wonder how it would sound on my Loffet?'

Well, here it is . . .

That's a lovely tune Clive.  I like the hanging high notes.

Julian and Greg: presumably your Fredaman Stickel (?) is related to John Stickle.
They collected the Waterman's Hornpipe from John in 1947, the tune made famous by Brass Monkey.
A lovely version on YouTube also by Mr Ellison currently joining in this thread!

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Have an odd couple of days ahead but afterwards will be looking up 'Christmas day in morning' thanks Julian!
Lovely playing Martin, and a gorgeous sounding Loffet!
Thanks both

Interesting article about the Stickle family - many thanks Greg. And more tunes to learn ! And the story about the fiddler being thrown overboard by the crew...wouldn't happen to a melodeonista, surely ?

J

Ps - and I too really like 'Ghosts' - lovely, Martin

Probably just ditch the devil's instrument and let the devil stay on board (:)
