rasping sound from reed before note plays
« on: January 09, 2008, 06:38:34 PM »

I hear an annoying rasping sound from some 'lower' notes on my meodeon just before the note plays - sounds like the reed has a soar throat!! Any advice on the cause of this or if I could attempt to solve it myself? I attach a short mp3 of the sound on alternating C/D notes on a hohner 4-stop. The file has been slowed down (30%) with audacity to emphasise the rasping. It is very obvious with three of the stops on the lower notes of the instrument and not so much with the 4th higher octave stop.

Regards,

Tom.

sounds like its been on a diet of mushy peas or baked beans but  might be valve trouble

I agree. It sounds to me like you need valves replaced.

If the sound comes before the push note then the problem is the outside valve, if its before the pull note its the inside valve and you will need to remove the reedplate to change the valve.

Another point is that changing the valve can make a slight change to the tuning, in practice you are only likely to notice a difference if the instrument is dry tuned.

? another advantage of 'wet' tuning!

Many thanks all. Reading the previous post this is obviously a job for the luthier.
