Harmonising Grunting 😱
« on: December 22, 2018, 03:02:04 PM »

I’ve been told  that when I am playing melodeon  I keep making grunting noises  along with the notes . I hadn’t noticed before myself but  after listening out for it I fear it may be true . I think it’s maybe just some notes that  make me involuntarily groan along with it . I was reading some article about a chap watching some old boys playing Cajun music and he noted the same observation , so hopefully I’m not the only one . So are there any more involuntary harmonising grunters out there 🤭

There are many famous grunters in the world of music, jazz pianists such as Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner and Keith Jarrett all did it a lot. Lots of box players  do it, I think of it as the voice's way of showing appreciation for your own playing. Obviously if it starts to spoil yours, or other people’s, enjoyment of your playing then you might want to control it. If not, then grunt away and make a joyful noise unto the creator (the physical exertion aspect of playing our instrument might have something to do with it too!).

I’m in good company then 😉 . I think I’d better just let the grunts flow free , otherwise I might explode 💥

I don't think I do it, but (no names no pack drill) I've recorded someone who did it a lot, and we've got another session coming up next year. This time I'm going to be very careful about microphone setup.

Yes, I don't think telling my recording artist not to do it will help at all.

I hadn’t forgotten him ( how could you!) but consider him to be more of a hummer than a grunter.   :o

Two grunting guitarists spring to mind, Martin Carthy and Joseph Spence.

Wouldn't worry too much about it in a rowdy session. Its when the grunting is accompanied by the facial expressions of someone chewing a wasp it starts to be a problem. 🤪
