I assume this is a common problem
« on: May 19, 2019, 09:57:49 AM »

Does anyone else trap their nipples in bellows?

Thoughts? Advice?

Sincerely,

Concerned boob owner

Finding a position for the box where it is slightly tipped forward should help.   That will also give you a better position for your arms, and especially the left arm and hand.

Hidden advantage of single strap playing
1. Hidden advantage of booblessness
2. Don't go too far or a whole new problem arises, gents
3. Years of study suggest a beer belly also runs interference effectively, but may be worse than the original issue.

Have you tried a minimiser bra? They tend to round off any protuberances. I believe some gentlemen could also benefit

Charlie Marshall at CGM musical sells bellows protectors, give him a call if you have any questions or need advice, he's a very helpful chap.

Sports 'tops' or bras seem to solve the problem.

In cool weather a quilted gilet should smooth the impact somewhat.  In warmer temperatures I find a fisherman’s smock a stylish and comfortable garment.  https://www.newlynsmocks.co.uk/

I wear one of these largely to avoid belt buckle etc. wear to the posterior bellows.  Happily none of my corporeal appendages have been trapped in the folds.

Elderly amateur musician hoping to stave off dementia by learning to play the melodeon.  Main instrument a Tommy, also D/G and G/C pokerworks,  a single row 2 stop Hohner, and a new addition to the free reedery, a rather splendid Paolo Soprani four voice 120 bass c-system chromatic button accordion.  Very shiny, very loud, and about the same size and weight as a small car.  Now I’ve traded me Benny with (ahem) a cash adjustment, to a three voice 60 bass Castagnari K3.

It could be that if you are using two straps  you have got them adjusted too tight and just a small increase in slack eg by one notch on each strap could make a difference.

As others have suggested a 'bellows protector ' pad  would  be the best option  if the above doesn't  do the trick

Good advice but, so far, Miss Handcart tops it with "Yup, and never play naked or clad only in a dressing gown  (:)" . As ever, Miss Handcart is on the button.
I'm amazed that Theo hasn't pulled this one for being .... but keep it coming everyone.
Hey, how about a theme of the month - a tune appropriate for doing it in the buff whilst in the buff.

way back a mate of mine playing a 120 bass piano box while seated  got his landing gear caught in the bellows - that  wouldn't have been too bad  but in the ensuing panic he swiftly closed the bellows  with excruciating conseqenses and much mirth from the rest of us'

I think you'll find that Theo has a great sense of humour, as long as decorum is maintained.  >:E

My mother in law - a quilter, made me a lovely and unique bellows protector. Mine was fixed on with poppers, which of course meant using screw holes. But I could have used velcro.
I've had to be more careful since with things like jacket buttons and zips. Despite the pain, I suspect we do more damage to the bellows that they do to us.

Final line of OP suggests that the author might be of the fairer sex, and as such much of the response is of limited relevance? 🙄

As with *jogger's nipple there are solutions and it is a matter of not putting things at risk. There will be a position or style that affords appropriate risk control.

*the inventor of jogger's nipple died of a heart attack. As far as I know that isn't as yet a reported risk in melodeon play. However as a medic I have first aided  2 heart attacksdue to playing the dangerous game of Bridge. (50% mortality)! 👨🏻‍⚕️
