In the Grauniad , today , there is a article , with picture of Oscar Woods , about the British Library giving free on-line access to its World music archive . How the system works , I don't know .

The sound archive search form is here: http://cadensa.bl.uk/uhtbin/cgisirsi/zRB5Grltb8/WORKS-FILE/43690041/38/0/POWER_SEARCH

23 recordings come up for a simple search of 'melodeon'. There's a lot there though - including a whole category of field recordings  (:) (or indeed 23 pages if I read is again correctly  ::))

Alas. no online listening unless you're on the British Library network, which rather defeats the object doesn't it?  :-\

Please try the link
http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C1002X0016XX-1600V0.xml#

selected in honour of EAT trad music day tomorrow. If you can play this - you have access to lots of stuff from http://sounds.bl.uk/ but make sure you click the 'Restrict search to recordings everyone can play' option

Cheers, K

That's the stuff, Kay.

Simon Ritchie now plays Font Whatlings' old melodeon and should have it with him at Stowmarket tomorrow.

I'll look out for him and it!

"The effect of different types of floors to step-dancing, makes a 'hellav-a-lot-of-difference what sort of floor yer on', village halls 'terrible, just like thunder'. You need to be able to hear yourself when dancing. When a key goes on an accordion 'sounds like someone shovin' bloody pins and needles up yer a*se'."

Thought I had, but it's been a long week, and I have no sound on my computer at work, so I didn't actually try it. D'oh. Is it home-time yet?  ::)

There are two sites - the full catalogue which Ellie posted - which has no on-line streaming and the Archival Sound Recordings which does play recordings where copyright permits. It's my understanding that you can hear anything in the catalogue at BL St Pancras London - so if it's rare or the *only* known recording it might be worth a trip!
