Youtubes: Caddam Woods, Bonny Kate and Watson's Hornpipe
« on: January 18, 2019, 02:12:42 PM »

Three more tunes played at tempo and then slowly for learning by ear from the Horsmonden tunes workshops.

Caddam Woods: https://youtu.be/l6yrtAEcbkU

Bonny Kate: https://youtu.be/ZMg75YDDkPY

The third YouTube will appear in a reply to this post. Let me know how you get on: it's always nice to hear from folks making use of these YouTubes, whether or not you can make the workshops.

Well played. Where are those tunes from? All from the british isles? Still searching for a tune to learn for the current Theme of the Month. ;-)

Watson's is from George Watson of Swanton Abbott, Norfolk.
Bonny Kate from the Ashover manuscript which you'll find on the Village Music Project web site.

Caddam Woods was written in the early/middle 50's by Scottish Bandleader Jim Cameron, and was immediately very popular.
Cameron then fell afoul of copyright/plagiarism allegations because of part of the tune's strong similarity to a German/Bavarian folk song. I don't know how it all turned out.

That's interesting - I read somewhere (the Fiddler's Companion is where I recall looking) that it was by Scott Skinner, The Strathspey King.

But now I search again I'm finding I was mistaken. Sorry to cause trouble!

Thank you!

Yes, though there's clearly a question mark over the very German sounding Caddam Woods.
