End Fold Bellows Re-Tape
« on: September 05, 2009, 09:52:20 AM »

I've just got an old pokerwork which needs some love - the bellows are in pretty good order but the gold tape is doing its usual trick of peeling away. I've replaced tape like-with-like on the main folds but I've never had to do the end folds which are glued up against the wooden frame.

Is there any trick for replacing the tape on these ends? I can see that I've got to take the frame off of the bellows, but it's fixed on with the same sort of synthetic glue that Hohner use on the keyboard arms to fix the pallets on. Its fairly flexible but I'm worried that ill rip the final bellows fold taking the frame off meaning that I wont be able to get an airtight seal once they are re-taped.

It can be done without completely removing bellows from frame.  I run a blunt knife round the join to a depth of no more than half the frame width, then pull out any bits of old tape that are loose.  I slightly reduce the width of the strips of tape for the end fold,  spread glue in the gap, and on the tape, then work the edge of the tape into the gap, fold over, wipe off surplus glue.  Once all the end tapes are in place clamp the bellows, either between stiff boards in a vice, or under a heavy weight, and leave till the glue dries.  Make sure you remove all surplus glue before clamping!   If you aren't confident that no more glue will squeeze out then lay strips of polythene or cling film over the glued areas before clamping

I have a similar problem with my Hohner 2 row (which I think is the same as a pokerwork without the pokerwork..as it were). Can I ask what type of glue you use?
