Hohner Piccola
« on: February 07, 2019, 06:53:45 PM »

Does anyone have info on this model?  Looks like a Club due to the cross-hatching on the inside row mid button.  A quick search didn't come up with anything and I'd like to be informed when I get a call back on this instrument for sale.

Thanks in advance.

I think it's the same as a Piccoletta, which is basically a Club I. Nice boxes.

Thanks, John.  Perhaps the Piccola is the male and the Picolleta the female...

25 buttons - maybe Club II size?

Yes if original it will be club system.  There are several variants of these early Clubs.  They can have 25, 23 or 21 buttons, wooden or metal treble action.  The wooden action ones are easy to spot because they have a screw in the centre of each treble button like this:

And they can have broad bellows frames the one Dick is asking about, or narrow frames like modern instruments.  All good playable boxes.  They were usually in CF and less often bflat Eflat - which is marked BEs on the end of the keyboard.

It's about 1 minute in before you can see the treble end on this clip  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcXHdUJflnU

I can’t see the main rows well enough to count the buttons in that clip,  but this Piccoletta of mine has only 23 buttons arranged 10/9/4

Yes Theo you are right, I miscounted, for some reason I was thinking 11/10/4. but of course it's 10/9/4. My Club I has 10/9/2, and it's in Bb/Eb

Theo...

The Picolla is 11/10/4 in the RH.  I spoke with the seller yesterday and am trying to arrange a visit to evaluate it first-hand, but it's a 2.5 hour drive each way in good weather and we've just had a massive winter storm which has made driving inadvisable.

I'll report back after the weather clears up.

I have one of these (11 10 4) and it seems to be the one i always pick up. Lovely tone, easy action, reeds speak so quickly and at low volume. Imho these are one of the true bargain boxes out there.  But i may have just struck lucky with mine    oh and did i mention the bass  :D

I have one in C/F, tuned at about 435. It has been declubbed. The basses are very, very nice and deep.

Looks like the Picolla expedition will be on the 23rd, weather permitting.  Shopping and meatballs at IKEA, Hohner hijinx and a couple hours of tunes with my favorite Sweidsh fiddler.

"Winston?"

Don't take any notice of him, Dick. Sir John has somehow got it into his head that I'm some sort of scrounger, don't know where he got that idea from. Funny folk, these Scotchmen.
