hohner buttons
« on: February 09, 2019, 06:57:20 PM »

I have two older Hohner Double Rays, one is a 1930's one I believe, black paint with the flat grill. The other is a light purple celluloid with the curved ribbed grill.  I would like to change the buttons of the black one to a more rounded shape like the purple one. Is there a specific button I need to get or should I try to pull the current ones off and carefully sand the edges to a nicer curve?  The sharp corner just wants to catch my fingertips.   Thanks,
David

Hi David - have you looked at Charlie's website?  Parts availability here in the states is rather limited, and I've found this guy to be absolutely amazing.  If anything is unclear or you don't see exactly what you are looking for, just shoot him an email.  He responds within 24 hours and is super helpful.  He's hooked me up with mushroom buttons for my 1 and 2 row boxes.  On that note, I found on the first one I totally destroyed the buttons trying to remove them.  The new ones went on nicely if I heated up the shaft just a little and then pressed firmly.  I'm debating what to do with some treble side buttons now because mine are like you described.  I tried sanding to remove some of the yellowing and maybe would be more successful with a dremel or something similar.  Since I've figured out how to get them off and put new ones on without bits flying all over the room I'm tempted to go with new.

If you aren't familiar with Charlie, his website is http://www.cgmmusical.co.uk/CGM_Musical_Services/Welcome.html  Everying is in GBP but you can use an online converter.  Shipping isn't cheap, but worth it if you have a decent shopping list.  He can send you an invoice through Paypal which will convert to USD.
