Poll: Tune of the Month for March 2019
« on: February 23, 2019, 02:42:11 PM »

Hi all - let's go again! This month:

Ganivelle - a lovely schottische written by Fred Paris, with more that a little resemblence (to my ear anyway) to Galopede - always mixing them up! Here's Anahata playing it through with the even more widely played Canal in October: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4Fr6N2nuz8

Dorset 4 Hand Reel - here's a session standard we haven't done yet; ABC and video courtesy of Lester, here: https://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.com/2012/10/tune-33-dorset-four-hand-reel-i-i-can.html

Origin of the World - as suggested by Arty,  “Origin of the World”  by Dave Shepherd...here is a nice video on a D/G Pokerwork https://youtu.be/2M95cuhjKtA

Midwintermarshen - Pete says "Here's a great tune and it's topical too, Midvintermarschen. Written in the original 2/4 it looks a little daunting, transposed to 4/4 (naughty, naughty!) it's looks simpler and sounds the same through an abc midi player so take your pick!" Oops! Sorry Pete, it's a little less topical now, but we can still have a go!

Looks like that great tune Origin of the World is winning. I struggle to play the tune in Am on my DG Mory as I have no low F nat or low C nat, so I'm looking forward to seeing how 8 other players manage.

You may find some players with a DG will play it in Em

That is definitely what I'm going to do, Greg. Just tried it out on my Loffet D/G and even though I have low notes, I can't quite play it in A minor. Which is a bit sad because it sounds so lovely when played in a low key. Playing in E minor, however, was a blast and I immediately "learned" the A part of the song. Don't plan to brag on here, but I'm just so happy that I could record it already. :D (Premature TotM... I should see a doctor.)

Edit: After playing through it a few times, I have noticed that I am still missing the low E in the 6th last bar of the B part. It's a pity because I really think that this song shines when played in a low octave and currently I'm using the lower two octaves that my instrument offers me. I really wouldn't want to transpose it by an octave...

Time to rush out and buy a GC? Same fingering.
Or there's always Bm. Should sound good if you have low voiced reeds.

Definitely works well in Bm on a D/G.  I recorded it in Bm for the mazurkas theme in Apr-18: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PnUj0Xg5TE&t=83s.  Although it sounds much better played slower than this...

If anyone wants to copy Paul Young's rendition, here's it in Bm with (I think anyway) the chords he selected and any alterations he may have made vs the ABC shared so far:

The chord change in the 'middle' of the 1st bar on the last line is afaik part of the tune. B minor is a fun key to play in as a DG player, and I really like how this tune sounds there, be interesting to hear how it sounds in other keys on the same box, with the different chords available.

I wonder if it will win. Things quite often turn later on.

While that's generally true, I'd wager a guess that six votes ahead is enough to warrant looking at the tabs in advance. ;-)

It must be just me - I just don't get this tune. If it wins though I'll probably give it a go in Bm on my DG and see if it makes any more sense playing it rather than listening to it.

I think it's great. I love this version by Paul Young and a sensitive fiddler. The piece reminds me of Flatworld in mood and shape.
It does also remind that I still haven't got an answer for what to do with the left hand. The versions I like have a great balance with held notes in the left hand, but these always seem to dominate when I try them, I don't know if it is just having extra stops on the left hand to take out an octave reed, or whether it'a a recording balance thing. Or just the player. I'll happily play any of the tunes this month.

Do you mean rhythmically? It's a mazurka but there's that weird 4-over-3 bit in the B part.

This tune is probably above my pay grade and if it wins I will probably just try to come up with something for the theme of the month again. But I do like this one.

Why not change that note. The tune is what you make it.  Maybe hold the G, or go to the E above rather than the one below, or hold a chord through it, or do an Anahata and make the note magically appear to be there, without actually playing it...(still can't quite work out how he does that).

Have considered both and time will tell which one I like better in the end. Maybe I'll even just give the bass E a short tap instead of exchanging the note with something on my right hand. (:)

No - I don't mean that. I mean there's nothing about the tune that makes me want to hear it again. It's possible that if I give it a go for TOTM as I usually try to I might start to 'get' it, I suppose.

I get it, though. This style of tune doesn't usually do much for me either. However, I listened to the original Blowzabella recording (https://youtu.be/TdwaUm1QDv0) and I thought that had a lot of drama and drive to it. Maybe it works better as a fiddle tune than on the melodeon (with no offense meant to Paul Young or Andy Cutting or anyone else).

That Blowzabella recording helps me, as I'd watched a live version of it, which was less restrained in the soprano sax playing. The recorded version is more controlled and gives a lift without  dominating. There's a fatness about the recording I like.

Origin of the World has been in my 'tunes in progress' pile for months without much progress - so if it wins t.o.t.m. I might redouble my efforts (and maybe reconsider choice of key).
I can't say its a favourite (and quite probably is much better on fiddle), but I do see it as a good learning tool - there are some phrases which consistently cause me problems so mastering it would be beneficial (in a masochistic sort of way!) Inflicting the constant repetition on t'missus and t'cat could however be regarded as sadism ! ::)
On the other hand I could of course consider learning some of the U.S. style polkas mentioned elsewhere... >:E
