Theme of the Month for March 2019: Slow Tunes
« on: March 01, 2019, 06:30:49 AM »

Hi all; this month, something nice and stately and slow. Could be a slow air, or a faster piece slowed down - up to you!

Cheers,

Clive

Oh, I like this theme; I'm sure we will hear lots of lovely waltzes. :||:

'nice and stately and slow' doesn't have to mean a waltz though does it. Come on guys, be creative.

No, it doesn't, but I like waltzes. ;D And yet rarely play them so for me this is a good opportunity to learn one.

And Fanny Power wasn't written as a Waltz. Far too early, they weren't even a twinkle in the eye.

Some hymns can be considered slow and sound lovely on a box.
This can be a nice opportunity to practice four-part right hand harmony :P

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?
Send me a private message or comment on the German Accordion Problem spreadsheet to improve the statistics of the project and get an estimate of the production date of the box if it is not known.

I play lots of hymns, 'cause I love to sing them and know a lot of them to sing, or play, but not together, sadly! However, playing harmonies is a different kettle of fish! I might try one this month, we'll see.

There is a 6/8 jig in the HSH Jackson collection - abc below - that Dave Shepherd and Beck Price recorded as a slow jig on Ashburnam. Also consider slow airs and the like.

I'll look forward to your video. Wonder if Inisheer would be a good example for this month. What do you reckon, Winston?

Nice one, Sir John. And you seem to have got over the difficulties of filming yourself. I'm intrigued though that your YT video doesn't show a channel name. I didn't know you could post without one.

Nice slow and stately......
A Strathspey Reel anyone?
As a consolation prize for not getting the Dorset four hand.....

There are two speeds for playing a Strathspey: Slow and Dead Slow. In Gaelic The Strathspey (dance) is "An Dannsa Deise" - the stately dance...traditionally a foursome reel. Think Dorset Four hand reel with elegant variations on the setting steps.  The older Strathspeys were originally Puirt-a-Beul, the melody contained only four bars and were danced at two steps to the bar. You cannot dance an English rant step that slowly without falling over. But the ceum-siubhail and ceum-coisigh ( travelling step and  setting steps repectively) can be danced very slowly and elegantly indeed.

I may be getting ahead of myself. Expect a late entry and probably not a Strathspey.

Probably not what this thread is for, but here's one of my own tunes, recorded again this morning. Video quality is due to me using Videopad software which is free, I need to find something better or pay for the full version.

To be honest, Nigel, that tune hasn't lodged itself in what passes for my brain, yet. If you record it and put it on here, then that'll remind me how it goes. Go on then, get cracking!
