Reposting old recordings for Tune/Theme of the Month
« on: March 06, 2019, 06:10:56 PM »

I've noticed that a lot of us post old recordings for Tune of the Month and Theme of the Month. Especially the latter threads see a lot of reposts because tunes can often be "reassigned" to new themes. I'm wondering whether or not this approach might miss the intention of Tune/Theme of the Month. I always understood it as an encouragement to learn a new tune or at least record certain tunes for the first time (if already known before). I think on the one hand it's very helpful to listen to existing recordings and explore interpretations of tunes to get inspired by them. On the other hand it just feels odd to me to see those reposts.

Please mind that I'm definitely not trying to judge any of those posts (or even anyone on here). I very much appreciate it that people post recordings at all and I understand that not everyone has time to learn and record one or two new songs each month. (But again, isn't that the intention behind TotM?) This is merely a thought that came to me during the past months and I wanted to voice it for discussion.

What do you think about reposting existing recordings in the monthly tune threads? Eager to hear your thoughts on the topic.

I agree that TOTM is for the encouragement of fresh playing. I can of course see that there are always good exceptions - people might want to stay an active participant but not be currently able to play, for example, but I like seeing new uploads.
Along with Fred's very gentle handling of this, I also don't want to put people off contributing in the best way for them, but I personally prefer new videos rather than links to existing ones.
Maybe it's just a question of balance.

That's me. Apologies if this approach doesn't subscribe to the ethos and criteria of ToTM. I don't want to p*ss anybody off.

I actually like this as it's a good reference/suggestion for how/what to play.
In general it's a community thing, so let people take it where they want!

Haha! That's a good joke, Martin. Surely, there's not a member on here who wouldn't be happy to listen to and watch your videos all day long! Many thanks for the encouragement that they give to dolts like me.

Hmm... honestly? If Tune of the Month is about sharing your interpretation of a tune then why does it matter when the recording was made?

Learning new tunes is great but so's playing or sharing old ones. Let's not try and impose arbitrary rules on each other.

Martin, pay it not a moment's heed - your playing is stunning whenever the recordings are made. I'm glad you've started playing again but don't shy away from sharing the old recordings too.

I very much agree with Ms Handcart. I love the sound and style of Martin's playing and his recordings from any date complement the totm.
Thinking about it, I reckon it was Martin's playing in the late 70s that made me want to be a decent melodeon player so it's no surprise I still enjoy his playing

Looking at this from a slightly different angle; Most of us Johnny-Come-Latelies don't have a decent "back catalogue" from which to post!

Some of us (ME), learn tunes by ear, so it is the only way of learning new tunes for them. Also, everybody puts their own twist/imprint on a tune, just through stylistic differences if nothing else. Adding little twiddly bits is all part of the fun too, so clones of other people's playing is most unlikely.

I always understood it as an encouragement to learn a new tune or at least record certain tunes for the first time (if already known before). (...) On the other hand it just feels odd to me to see those reposts.
More or less exactly my thoughts.

Back in 2009 AndyShear wrote:

While visiting a friend the other week in Durham , doing a few gigs , he showed me a thing they do over on a mandolin forum ( mandolin cafe ) where they have a tune for the month , or maybe a week . So they pick a tune , not sure how this comes about , then people go off learn it and post up presumably on youtube their take on said tune , and comment , share ideas etc about it .
(my emphasis)

For me the "go off and learn it"-part or to do at least a fresh recording was constitutive for the Tune of the Month (a bit less for the ThotM).

Up to a certain point it isn't a problem to have (re-)posts of older recordings. But when 50+ procent of the postings in the ThotM threads are merely older reposts, it could get a bit boring.

There's probably a bit of a pattern, though? To grossly oversimplify:
Beginning of month "Ooh I've one of those lying around"
(days pass as people fumble their way round tune) (and some of them just get on with it magnificently)
Mid month - some WIPs appear
End of month - new versions (inc from the "ooh I've got" lot) appear.
Seems a fair enough mix

Doesn't bother me either way whether posts are old videos or not, to be honest - as long as they're of the poster. I do it to build a repertoire, so posting old videos of myself doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but that shouldn't stop others if they want to share old recordings. I do find it amusing when I look at my back catalogue (www.melodeonvideo.co.uk) and discover pieces I have absolutely no memory of playing, much less learning and recording!

Case in point.

http://www.melodeonvideo.co.uk/2017/05/13/the-bluemont-waltz-played-by-clive-williams-on-melodeon/

What on earth is that? Never heard it before in my life.

[Further edit: Oh, that's quite nice. Must learn that.]

Thanks for the laugh Clive!

I agree with Helena and Lyra on repostings.
I absolutely love what I discovered this month, for example. If there were hundred of entries each month, it might be an issue, but that's hardly the case.
I can't imagine that repostings deter new postings, either.
