The only extant tune known to have been composed by Cornelius Lyons harper friend of Carolan's  You can play it slower. It goes OK in D or G

When I click on that link, Steve, it says that it can't find the page. Perhaps one needs to have signed up to soundcloud, which I am reluctant to do as I know nothing about it and don't want to sign up to yet another site. I guess I shall just have to pass on listening to this and any other clips on that site.

Understandably, yes.  I will investigate and see if there is a way round it.  I know Lester uses SoundCloud - perhaps he can help if he's around somewhere.

I think I have now made the track public.  Would be interested to know if it works for people now - I'm afraid I'm not used to this sharing music business! :|bl

My favorite slow air is by the brilliant mandolinist Peter Ostroushko.  It is called Heart of the Heartland.  My wife and I play it. See attached video.  Charlie

It works fine for me.  And I'm just a "public," not a Soundcloud member.  Thank you sharing a beautiful melody, beautifully played.

Am I right in thinking that most responses (not all) have been about Scottish/Irish tunes, and does that imply that the English are less romantic?

This was a great topic. Hundreds of great tunes have passed by in the meantime but here's my current favourite, which surfaced in the Tune of the Month poll a few days ago. This is so clever!

The Lounge Bar. Skip the first minute to get to the tune.

I really like a couple of slow air I picked up from Kathryn Tickell.  The first is a Tom Anderson tune  "Da Slockit Light" which Kathryn play so sympathetically.  (I understand she had fiddle lessons with Tom)
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJne71TH7fA

The second is one of her own tunes, Brafferton, which is great when played as a slow air:

Aside from KT, I think Phil Cunningham is an absolute master of slow airs with tunes (not songs!) like Sarah's Song, Loch Katrines Lady etc.

I don't know if it implies that the English are less romantic than the Irish or Scottish.
I suspect the real reason has to do with history.

The tune for My love's an arbutus aka strawberry tree.

I sang the song 60 years ago and the tune has never left me.

I suspect the real reason has to do with history.

Apart from the original statement being incorrect (I looked at the thread), which bit of "history" would mean that ordinary English folk were incapable of composing or appreciating airs?

Many, if not most, of these airs (tunes) are used for songs. If you want good airs, then English traditional music is awash with them.
