The Banks of Sullane. (Jackie Daly - Ossian Publications OSS CD 30 - track 11)

Cailin Deas Cruite na mBo [Pretty Maid Milking the Cows](Banks of Sullane is a variation , I believe)

Eamonn a'Chnoic [Ned of the Hills but NOT the Pogues beast ]

Fear a Bhata

I only seem to like Irish and Scottish airs . There is no English air that 'gets' me .

Sorry to sidetrack this thread slightly.  Does anyone use Five Line Skink as an ABC 'reader'?  If so, do you often encounter an error message when you copy in a new tune?  I ask because I have just tried to copy in 'L'Inconnue de Limoise' and it (the program) didn't like it for some reason.  :-[

Floating from Skerry is one of my favourites. Also Battle of the Somme - not technically a slow air, but still a beautiful (and very powerful) tune.

"A tune or song played or sung (rhythmically) freely" according to Google.

Does that mean that an air is a waltz or mazurka that is played in such a way that you can't dance to it?

That's been more or less my observation over the years. However many of the Irish ones seem to be song tunes. France's Patrick Bouffard and Ann-Lise Foy also commonly play slow airs - which commonly lead on to Ann-Lise singing.

To turn this thread slightly - I'm presently working on Petters Erik Eriksson's , unusually in G major. Yes it's a dance, yes you can dance to it - but has all the lyricism of a slow air. Have to say its timing is sending me mad, but defo my favourite at the moment. Kris

Great tunes Steve, thanks for that - though its usually the slow scots airs that 'get' me too!

I recommend Calon Lan to stir your Welshness up and to get you to forsake these northern tendancies

If so then I must be an Air expert, most people would find it difficult to dance to anything I play. ;D

My favourite at the mo is "Archie Macdonald of Keppoch" (the title is something like that).  A lovely tune.

Funnily enough I play Calon Lan very often - but much more of a stirring anthem rather than a slow air...might be something to do with the way I grew up singing it at the rugby!

Bonny at Morn - Northumbrian

My daughter Dolly is named after another song from Northumbrian Minstrelsey, and I sang her 'Bonny at Morn' as a lullaby. Nice to hear her then singing it on Radio Sheffield last year ..

"How long have you known that song, Dolly"?
  "I can't actually remember a time that I haven't known it"  8)

I'd never thought of it as a 'tune' per se - but why not? Mally's bookshop now has Minstrelsy in facsimile incidentally. Great set of tunes.

Mine is the Northern Lass which I learnt via a Brian Peters LP
and John of the Greeny Way ( the 1980's printing) but which I later found out first made its revival appearance  on Crookfinger Jack's Beggar Boy of the North album

I heard Brian Peters play that live many years ago, and I'd forgotten all about it until now. It's so lovely.

What about The Hills of Pomeroy? That has the advantage of being a slow air that can also be played as a faster march.

The Breamish is a lovely slow air and I often add Random at the end to speed things up a bit.
