A 5 times Runner up - Hunt the Squirrel

Sorry for the wild echo, I have an empty room in my flat at the moment and I couldn't resist the temptation to record there.

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?

Great playing and very interesting sound - not bad at all for an empty room. I like the bass lines you gave the song.

But if I may comment on your box (which overall sounds lovely), it seems to me as if one note has a lot more tremolo than others. It can be heard best at 1:24 of your recording. Is that just the recording or may that note be out of tune?

Thanks :)

Box is definitely out of tune. You buy a cheap Chinese box, you get a cheap Chinese box. I'll probably tune it sooner or later.

Sounds good,Eshed. I had wondered what those boxes sounded like, and it seems a very good core sound.

Every so often someone does something a little different with a tune and the results can be astonishing. This is one such and I love it to bits!

Wow! I normally don't really care for "lush chord" arrangements, but you managed to do it and still keep a very solid and satisfying rhythm that for me kept the tune from getting lost in the left-hand explorations. Really nice!

Had Mark, my violinist friend, round last night, so we dusted off a tune we used to play that missed the cut in the TOTM poll in January; the "Rosbif" waltz. Inverted commas because of course it's not called that, it's just learned off Rosbif, who released 2 seminal albums in the 1980's. You'll find a bit more information/background on how they uncovered the tune from Pete, who was in the band, here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,23278.0.html

Here we go - played on a 1930's Hohner Club I in C/F.

Interesting side-thing; no sooner did I post this, but youtube planted a copyright claim on it - in particular, this track from a (I assume) piano accordion player, Dan Newton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n880tRDHqnU . Quite apart from the validity of the claim, which I've disputed, I have to say I find the technology really quite impressive. It's recognised the tune correctly, instantly, even though they sound quite different.

Thank you.
It's sold under the brand "Gankine" but is suspected to be Chinese in origin. While it's not a bad box, it came with lacking setup and tuning, a rattling reed, a slightly leaking gasket, an air valve mechanism that needed adjusting and other things I probably forget, so I can't say I recommend it.

The Three Sea Captains was in the running several times and never made it to the top. Like some others, I expect, I remember playing it at ceilidhs a long time ago, but it seems to have fallen out of fashion in recent years.
Played here at something more like the slower tempo required for its original use as an Irish step dance tune.

There are other versions of Three Sea Captains. We use the version that Boldwood play on their CD “Feet, don’t fail me now.”

Redowa Polka was runner up quite a few times so here it is along with The Waterloo Dance played on my C/F. The set is in the repertoire of Tumbling Tom but we're not often asked to play 48 bar polkas - shame!

It should be a nice finish,  Hugh, as I nicked it (and the set) off you!  ;) I should have cut it off sharper at the end though.

One more from me - this was the one I intended to record before my chum Mark came round! This is Purcell's Trumpet Tune and Air, taken from the playing of my concertina playing mate Alan Day. When this was in the poll in May 2016 it scored precisely one vote... and I'm pretty sure that one vote was me! So, ladies and gentlemen, I present the least successful poll candidate ever!

https://youtu.be/BlrDqswNlvI

Honestly, I think you're a tough lot! When I nominated it, I really thought it had a good chance of doing well - it's a fantastic tune, and it fits beautifully on a 2 row. I'm playing it here on a Castagnari Lilly in A/D (so we're in D).

Amusingly, this is my second attempt at recording it. The first was discarded when I noticed the ceiling light behind my head was on and was providing a really convincing halo effect. I don't normally pay much attention to facial expressions when I play - I'm always going to look grumpy - but I do draw the line at making myself look like a religious icon.
