I saw this on a friend's f.b. page and it spoke to me, profoundly.

As they say; "There's many a true word that's spoken in jest!"

(But should we be making fun of oriental culture, I wonder?)

Is anyone making fun of oriental (does one still say that?) culture? There are many claims on the origins of the saying on which this very apt joke is based, and I thought the days were long gone when we thought it worthy of comment if the illustration didn't depict a white European.

Yes, probably.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek, Andrew! Sorry everyone.

It is a parody of what is often ascribed to be an 'ancient Chinese proverb' Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day...' But which may well be English or from many other cultures, probably simultaneously. I don't have an issue with the cultural reference.

I see a very positive side to the original post:   Musicians understand that there are more important things than money.

Musicians understand that there are more important things than money.

When I consider how my instruments have increased in value at least in line with inflation, if not better, and add the money I've earned from playing them, I suspect they have performed rather better than most of my more conventional investments. At least, that's what I keep telling my wife.

They're also a lot more fun than an ISA.

Himself's investments actually lost money last year - one reason not to make the acquisitions look too impressive, in case I need to go out busking should his choices for the next three years prove equally lacking.
