Making custom reed plates.
« on: April 29, 2019, 06:58:50 PM »

I am currently doing some research for Weltmeister into making custom reeds. I am lucky that my friend and partner in crime Mark at Survival research Labs has a German 5 axis CNC mill and was willing to take this on.
These are test reeds and thy were copies of some nice hand finished reeds made most likely in San Francisco in the 30's or 40's.
We had some tolerance issues since these old reeds seemed to all be slightly different so I ended up having to hand finish them.
I would also add a broaching operation if we went into production mode.

That was fun to watch. How are reed plates normally made? Are they stamped, or cast?

From what I have seen it is a combination of both I have seen casting shrink marks on large reed plates in the past.
for small production runs cnc is practical since all the plates are the same size. It takes about 5 min to do a reed plate.
It is easy to do variations on plate thickness and other variables.
