Cracking tunes Martin!

Here’s my own humble effort.

https://youtu.be/5DuZAeYp1rs

I think I play this a little slow but there were no dancers to speed me up.
In our tradition this is Chingford - the music for a dance learnt by our side from Chingford Morris as their version of the Upton upon Severn Stick Dance. Coincidentally we have a different and, as I understand, original version of the Upton upon Severn Stick Dance in our repertoire (to the tune of The Girl I Left Behind) hence this one is distinguished by the name .....”Chingford”.

The tune is properly known as Twin (or Two?) Sisters and was collected in America by Maud Karpeles I believe, although I doubt it sounded much like mine when she collected it.

Chingford, Upton, Twin Sisters, whatever....
Gren

Lovely!   what model Baffetti is that?  shopping for an upgrade and considering one r=ight now,. Hope it sounds half as good as that one,.  I like them brifght and loud for outdoor playing,

Thanks Mark. It’s an Oakwood SuperIII “Music Room special” model. It’s a bit unusual in that it has three MMM voices (all playing in that video) and they are normally LMM. Jon Loomes reckoned it was a Friday afternoon special from the factory and wouldn’t have been ordered that way.
If I’d known how much Morris I’d be playing when I got it I may have gone for the similar Binci II model which is lighter and perhaps a bit more brash and louder, but mine is pretty loud. I’ve just had it tuned by Martyn White to give it more tremolo with the third voice in, and actually always play it that way unless I want to avoid scaring the neighbours. The dynamics are very good, it will play quiet - it’s me that makes it loud.
I think the guys at squeezeboxes.co.uk are still connected with Oakwood, and still sell the Binci and Super models.
https://squeezeboxes.co.uk/collections/melodeon/brand_dino-bafetti And there’s a fair few on this forum play them, the Binci II is reckoned by many to be the definitive Morris box ever. But to my knowledge mine is the only MMM, and for Morris, I think the L voice would make it less cutting - a few people I know who play 3 voice boxes stop the L voice when playing out. The walnut has nicely mellowed now too, it’s discreetly flashy.  :o

Wish I had the scratch for one of those, as my budget is about half, I'm considering a black pearl II or possibly a carnival III (because of the stop for the bass thirds)Or maybe for about the same money I should think about a D/G Lilly instead?
Opinions welcome.

I suspect the original team would have danced to something most players would frown upon these days...possibly Yankee Doodle...just as Abbots Bromley rarely dance to the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance tune... >:E :|glug

I wonder if I can train the dancers to dance to whatever the musician throws at them?

Good luck with that one...I reckoned I was on a winner if they actually listened.... :|glug

Ok...because it's that time of year...Some caveats:

It's long (dance length...)
It features a gratuitous key change
And possibly the worst affliction of Melodeon Face EVER...(and that takes a bit of doing...)

Now I certainly did enjoy listening to that one. Thanks for recording it. And yes, I have to agree, the melodeon face is strong in this one - especially when changing to the outer row. :D

Good to listen to, and good to watch, if a little terrifying.

I've always thought that the tune commonly used for the Upton on Severn Stick Dance was called Barley Break, not Twin Sisters. Have I been wrong all this time?

Here are a couple of Morris tunes I've not recorded before. Bonnets of Blue and Queen's Delight. Played on my Saltarelle L'Elfique.

I've played it for a variety of teams over the years and we recorded it on our first CD...never heard it so called...but to quote the sainted Will..."What's in a name."... :|glug

I have no experience when it comes to Morris music so I decided to play Princess Royal - a Morris classic but interpreted a little bit differently.

I don't normally quote The Session web site, but needed some help after the above, thinking myself ignorant on the name of this tune since the 70's. The site says - Also known as Barley Brae, Two Sisters, Upton-on-Severn, Upton-on-Severn Stick Dance, Upton-upon-Severn.
So maybe I should have said Barley Brae not barley Break!
